How to Clean Window Tracks

Dirty window tracks are one of the most neglected cleaning tasks in any home. Grime, dead insects, and debris build up in the channels and make windows hard to open, damage weatherstripping, and look unsightly. Here's how to clean them thoroughly.

Why Clean Window Tracks?

What You'll Need

• Vacuum with brush attachment
• Old toothbrush or small stiff brush
• Cotton swabs
• Spray bottle with dish soap and water, or white vinegar and water
• Paper towels or microfiber cloth

Step 1: Vacuum the Tracks First

Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to remove all loose debris from the tracks. Get into the corners and along the full length of each channel. This removes the bulk of the dirt before you add any liquid.

Step 2: Apply Cleaning Solution

Spray the tracks with dish soap and warm water, or white vinegar and water (50/50). Let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes to loosen caked-on grime.

Step 3: Scrub with a Toothbrush

Use an old toothbrush to scrub the tracks, paying special attention to corners and the groove where the weatherstripping sits. The bristles get into the narrow channels that cloths cannot reach.

Step 4: Clean the Corners with Cotton Swabs

The corners of window tracks accumulate the most grime and are the hardest to reach. Use cotton swabs or a chopstick wrapped in a damp cloth to clean these areas thoroughly.

Step 5: Wipe Out the Loosened Grime

Use paper towels or a microfiber cloth to wipe out all the loosened dirt and cleaning solution. You may need several passes. For stubborn stains, repeat the spray-and-scrub process.

Step 6: Rinse and Dry

Wipe the tracks with a damp cloth to remove any soap residue, then dry thoroughly with a clean cloth. Moisture left in tracks can cause mold and rust on metal tracks.

Step 7: Lubricate After Cleaning

After cleaning, apply a small amount of silicone lubricant to the tracks. This makes the window slide smoothly and helps prevent future debris from sticking.
