How to Clean Paint from Clothes

Paint on clothes is one of the most common DIY painting accidents — and whether it's salvageable depends largely on how quickly you act and what type of paint it is. Latex paint caught while still wet is usually fully removable. Dried latex paint is trickier but often still fixable. Oil-based paint is the hardest to remove and may permanently stain some fabrics. Cleaning Wet Latex Paint from Clothes

1. Act immediately — the faster you treat wet latex paint, the better your chances of full removal.
2. Scrape off excess — use a spoon or plastic scraper to remove as much wet paint as possible without spreading it.
3. Rinse under cold running water from the back of the fabric to push the paint out rather than deeper in.
4. Apply dish soap — work a generous amount of dish soap into the stain with your fingers and rinse. Repeat until the water runs clear.
5. Launder normally — wash in the washing machine on the warmest setting safe for the fabric. Check before drying — heat from the dryer will set any remaining paint permanently.

Cleaning Dried Latex Paint from Clothes

1. Scrape off the bulk — use a plastic scraper to remove as much dried paint as possible.
2. Apply Goo Gone — work Goo Gone into the stain and let it sit for 5–10 minutes to soften the dried paint.
3. Scrub and rinse — scrub with an old toothbrush and rinse under warm water. Repeat as needed.
4. Treat with dish soap — apply dish soap, work it in, and rinse thoroughly.
5. Check before drying — inspect the stain before putting the garment in the dryer. If paint remains, repeat the treatment. Never dry a garment with paint still in it.

Cleaning Oil-Based Paint from Clothes

1. Scrape off excess while still wet if possible.
2. Apply mineral spirits or turpentine to the stain and blot with a clean cloth. Work from the outside of the stain inward.
3. Apply dish soap to remove the solvent, then rinse thoroughly.
4. Launder normally and check before drying.

Note: oil-based paint on delicate fabrics (silk, wool, dry-clean only) may be beyond home treatment. Consider professional dry cleaning.
