Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Site and Foundation
Choose a level site with good drainage. Clear vegetation and level the ground. For a simple shed foundation, use pressure-treated 4x4 skids laid directly on the ground or on gravel. For a more permanent foundation, use concrete piers or a concrete slab. Level the skids carefully — everything built on top depends on a level foundation.
Step 2: Build the Floor Frame
Build a rectangular floor frame from pressure-treated 2x4 lumber on top of the skids. Add interior joists every 16" on center. Attach 3/4" pressure-treated plywood to the top of the frame. The floor should be solid, level, and square — measure diagonally to confirm square.
Step 3: Build the Wall Frames
Build four wall frames from 2x4 lumber on a flat surface, then stand them up. Each frame consists of a bottom plate, top plate, and vertical studs every 16" on center. Include rough openings for the door and any windows. The front wall is typically taller than the back wall to create the roof slope.
Step 4: Stand and Connect the Walls
Stand the wall frames on the floor frame and nail to the floor. Connect adjacent walls at the corners. Add a second top plate (double top plate) to tie the walls together and provide a nailing surface for the roof. Check that all walls are plumb and square.
Step 5: Sheath the Walls
Attach 1/2" OSB or plywood sheathing to the outside of the wall frames. Cut out door and window openings. The sheathing adds rigidity to the wall frames and provides a nailing surface for the siding.
Step 6: Build the Roof
Cut roof rafters from 2x4 lumber at the appropriate angle for your roof pitch. A 4:12 pitch (4" rise per 12" run) is a good standard for a shed. Install a ridge board at the peak. Attach rafters to the ridge board and to the wall top plates using hurricane ties. Sheath the roof with 1/2" OSB. Apply roofing felt, then asphalt shingles starting from the bottom edge and working up.
Step 7: Install Siding
T1-11 siding (a grooved plywood panel) is the most popular choice for sheds — it installs quickly and looks good. Attach panels to the wall sheathing with exterior screws, starting at the bottom and working up. Overlap panels at horizontal joints. Cut around door and window openings.
Step 8: Install the Door
Install a pre-hung door in the rough opening, shimming until plumb and level. Nail through the door jamb into the rough opening framing. Add exterior trim around the door opening. Install a door handle and latch.
Step 9: Install the Window (Optional)
Install a pre-made window in the rough opening. Flash the window properly with self-adhesive flashing tape. Add exterior trim around the window.
Step 10: Add Trim and Paint
Install 1x4 corner boards at each corner to cover the siding edges. Add fascia boards along the roof edges. Apply exterior primer, then 2 coats of exterior paint. Choose a color that complements your home's exterior. Paint all surfaces including the underside of the roof overhang.
