Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Plan Your Desk Layout

Decide on dimensions based on your room and workflow. Sketch the desk with exact measurements. Consider: Do you need drawers? A keyboard tray? Cable management holes? Plan these features before cutting anything.

Step 2: Cut the Desktop

Cut your desktop from 3/4" plywood or glue up solid wood boards to your desired size. For plywood, use a straight edge guide with your circular saw for perfectly straight cuts. Sand the desktop from 80 to 220-grit until silky smooth.

Step 3: Build the Leg Frames

Build two identical leg frames from 2x4 lumber — each frame is a rectangle with two vertical legs and two horizontal stretchers. Use pocket hole screws and wood glue at each joint. Check for square. These frames will support each end of the desktop.

Step 4: Add the Back Stretcher

Cut a 2x4 stretcher to connect the two leg frames at the back, at desk height. This stretcher adds rigidity and prevents the desk from racking side to side. Attach with pocket hole screws and glue.

Step 5: Attach the Desktop

Set the desktop on the frame. From inside the frame, drive screws up through the top stretchers into the desktop underside. Pre-drill to avoid splitting. Alternatively, use tabletop fasteners for a cleaner look.

Step 6: Add a Lower Shelf (Optional)

Cut a shelf from 3/4" plywood to fit between the leg frames at 8–10" from the floor. Attach with pocket hole screws. This shelf is great for a CPU tower, printer, or storage baskets.

Step 7: Drill Cable Management Holes

Use a 2" hole saw to drill cable management holes in the desktop — typically one near each back corner. Sand the hole edges smooth and add a rubber grommet for a finished look.

Step 8: Apply Finish

Apply stain if desired, then 3 coats of polyurethane. A desk surface sees daily use — use a durable finish. Water-based poly dries faster; oil-based is more durable. Sand lightly between coats with 220-grit.

Step 9: Add Leveling Feet and Cable Management

Attach adjustable leveling feet to the bottom of each leg. Add cable management clips along the underside of the desk to keep cords organized and off the floor.

  • L-shaped desk: Build two desktop sections and join at a corner for maximum workspace
  • Standing desk: Increase leg height to 42–48" for a standing workstation
  • Floating desk: Mount the desktop to the wall with a French cleat for a space-saving look
