Adding a new window to a room brings in natural light, improves ventilation, and can dramatically change the feel of a space. It's a significant project that involves cutting through the wall, framing a new opening, and weatherproofing — but with careful planning and the right approach, it's achievable. Here's what you need to know.

Before You Start: Critical Considerations
Load-Bearing Walls
The most important question before cutting any wall is whether it's load-bearing. Load-bearing walls support the weight of the structure above them. Cutting into a load-bearing wall without proper temporary support and a correctly sized header can cause serious structural damage. If you're unsure, consult a structural engineer or experienced contractor before proceeding.
Permits
Adding a window almost always requires a building permit. Check with your local building department before starting. Unpermitted work can cause problems when selling your home and may not be covered by homeowner's insurance.
Utilities
Use the stud finder to check for electrical wiring, plumbing, and HVAC ducts in the planned window location. Never cut into a wall without knowing what's inside it.
Step 1: Choose the Window Location and Size
Choose a location between existing studs if possible — this minimizes the framing work required. Use the stud finder to map the stud layout. The rough opening should be 1/2" wider and 1/2" taller than the window unit on each side. Use the laser level to mark the opening location on the wall.
Step 2: Frame the Rough Opening
Cut and remove the drywall in the planned opening area. Remove any studs within the opening, cutting them at the top and bottom plates. Install a properly sized header above the opening — the header carries the load that the removed studs previously supported. Install jack studs (trimmer studs) on each side of the opening to support the header. Install a rough sill at the bottom of the opening. This framing creates the structural rough opening for the window.
Step 3: Cut the Exterior
From inside, drill corner holes through the exterior sheathing at each corner of the rough opening. From outside, connect the holes and cut through the sheathing and siding. Remove the cut section. Apply self-adhesive flashing tape around the rough opening perimeter before installing the window.
Step 4: Install the Window
With a helper, lift the window unit into the rough opening from outside. Center it and check plumb and level with the laser level. Insert shims between the window frame and the rough opening framing to hold it in position. Drive screws through the window's nailing flange into the framing. Check operation — the window should open and close smoothly.
Step 5: Flash and Seal
Apply self-adhesive flashing tape over the nailing flange, starting at the bottom and working up the sides, then across the top. Apply a generous bead of GE silicone caulk around the exterior perimeter where the window meets the siding. This weatherproofing step is critical — water infiltration around windows is one of the most common and costly home repair issues.
Step 6: Insulate and Finish the Interior
Fill the gap between the window frame and the rough opening framing with low-expansion spray foam or insulation. Patch the interior drywall around the window using the drywall repair kit. Install interior window casing using the miter saw and brad nailer. Fill nail holes, caulk, and paint.
