Hardwood Floor vs Engineered Hardwood Floor

Hardwood Floor vs Engineered Hardwood Floor

What's the Difference?

Solid hardwood is a single piece of wood milled from top to bottom, typically 3/4" thick. It can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its lifetime. Engineered hardwood is a layered product with a real hardwood veneer on top bonded to multiple layers of plywood underneath. It looks identical to solid hardwood from above but behaves very differently.

Moisture Resistance

Winner: Engineered hardwood. The cross-ply construction makes engineered hardwood significantly more dimensionally stable. It expands and contracts less with humidity changes, making it suitable for basements, over concrete, and in kitchens. Always use a moisture meter to check subfloor conditions before installing either type.

Refinishing

Winner: Solid hardwood. Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished 3-5 times over its lifetime. Engineered hardwood can only be refinished 1-2 times before the veneer is too thin to sand further.

Installation

Winner: Engineered hardwood. Engineered hardwood can be installed as a floating floor, glued down, or nailed. Solid hardwood must be nailed or stapled to a wood subfloor and cannot be floated or installed over concrete. Use a pneumatic flooring nailer for nail-down installation of either type.

Cost

Winner: Engineered hardwood (usually). Engineered hardwood is typically 20-40% less expensive than comparable solid hardwood.

Longevity

Winner: Solid hardwood. A solid hardwood floor installed correctly can last 100+ years. Engineered hardwood typically lasts 25-50 years before the veneer is too thin to refinish.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose solid hardwood if: You want maximum longevity, plan to refinish multiple times, and are installing over a wood subfloor above grade
  • Choose engineered hardwood if: You're installing over concrete, in a basement, in a high-humidity area, or want a floating floor installation

Maintenance Is the Same for Both

Once installed, both types are maintained identically. Use Bona Professional Hardwood Floor Cleaner with a microfiber mop for regular cleaning, and apply Rejuvenate Professional Wood Floor Restorer periodically to maintain the finish.
