Why Is My Washing Machine Shaking So Violently?

Some vibration during the spin cycle is normal — but violent shaking that moves the machine across the floor, makes loud banging sounds, or causes the machine to hit walls or cabinets is not. This level of vibration can damage the machine, your flooring, and surrounding cabinetry over time. The good news: the cause is almost always one of a few fixable issues.

Cause 1: Unbalanced Load (Most Common)

An unbalanced load is the most common cause of violent shaking. When heavy items clump together on one side of the drum, the drum becomes off-center during the spin cycle and the machine shakes violently trying to compensate.

Fix:

• Stop the machine and open the door
• Redistribute laundry evenly around the drum
• Remove some items if the machine is overloaded
• Never wash a single heavy item alone — add similar items to balance (e.g., wash two towels instead of one)
• Restart the spin cycle

Cause 2: Machine Not Level

A washing machine that isn't sitting perfectly level will rock and shake during the spin cycle. Even a slight tilt can cause significant vibration at high spin speeds.

Fix:

• Place a spirit level on top of the machine to check front-to-back and side-to-side
• Adjust the leveling feet at the base of the machine — most feet screw in and out to raise or lower each corner
• Lock the feet in place with the locking nut once level

Cause 3: Shipping Bolts Still Installed (New Machines)

• Remove all shipping bolts before operating the machine — keep them in case you move
• Consult your machine's installation manual for the exact location

Cause 4: Hard or Uneven Floor Surface

A washing machine on a soft floor (like vinyl or laminate over a flexible subfloor) or an uneven surface will amplify vibration significantly.

Fix:

Cause 5: Worn Shock Absorbers or Suspension Springs
