Why Is My Washing Machine Not Spinning?
A washing machine that won't spin — or spins weakly — leaves clothes dripping wet and takes much longer to dry. This is a frustrating but usually fixable problem. Here are the most common causes, starting with the ones you can check and fix yourself.
Cause 1: Unbalanced Load (Most Common)
An unbalanced load is the most frequent reason a washing machine won't spin. Modern machines have sensors that detect imbalance and reduce or stop the spin cycle to prevent damage.
Signs: Machine stops mid-cycle, makes loud banging noises, or displays an error code
Fix:
- Open the machine and redistribute the laundry evenly around the drum
- Remove some items if the machine is overloaded
- Avoid washing single heavy items (like one large towel or one pair of jeans) alone — add similar items to balance the load
- Restart the spin cycle
Cause 2: Machine Not Level
A washing machine that isn't sitting level on the floor will vibrate excessively and may stop spinning to protect itself.
Fix:
- Use a spirit level to check if the machine is level front-to-back and side-to-side
- Adjust the leveling feet at the base of the machine until it sits perfectly level
- Place anti-vibration pads under the feet to stabilize the machine and reduce vibration during the spin cycle
Cause 3: Clogged Drain / Filter Preventing Spin
Many machines won't enter the spin cycle if they detect water still in the drum — which happens when the drain is blocked.
Fix:
- Check and clean the pump filter
- Inspect the drain hose for kinks or blockages
- Once drainage is restored, the spin cycle should work normally
Cause 4: Lid Switch or Door Latch Issue
Washing machines won't spin if the lid (top loaders) or door (front loaders) isn't properly closed and latched. A faulty lid switch or door latch can prevent spinning even when the door appears closed.
Fix:
- Open and firmly close the door or lid — listen for a click
- Inspect the latch for visible damage
- If the latch is broken, it needs replacement — this is a relatively inexpensive repair
Cause 5: Worn Drive Belt (Front Loaders)
Front load washers use a drive belt to spin the drum. If the belt is worn, stretched, or broken, the drum won't spin even though the motor runs.
Signs: Motor runs but drum doesn't move; burning rubber smell
Fix: This requires opening the machine to inspect and replace the belt — a job for a repair technician or confident DIYer.
Cause 6: Motor or Control Board Issue
If none of the above causes apply, the motor or control board may be faulty. Check for error codes on the display and consult your machine's manual.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- Redistribute and balance the load
- Check the machine is level — adjust feet or add anti-vibration pads
- Clean the filter and check the drain hose
- Firmly close and latch the door or lid
- Check for error codes
- Call a repair technician if none of the above resolves it
