Why Is My Washing Machine Leaving Marks on Clothes?
Marks and residue on clothes after washing are a common problem with several possible causes. The good news is that most are easy to diagnose and fix once you know what to look for. Here are the most common types of marks and what causes them.
Type 1: White Powdery Residue or Streaks
Cause: Undissolved detergent — most common with powder detergent in cold water, or using too much detergent
Fix:
- Switch to liquid detergent or laundry pods which dissolve more reliably
- Use the correct amount of detergent — measure with a silicone measuring cup to avoid overdosing
- Increase wash temperature slightly to help detergent dissolve
- Don't overload the machine — clothes need room to rinse properly
- Run an extra rinse cycle
Type 2: Grey or Black Greasy Marks
Cause: Fabric softener or detergent buildup inside the drum depositing onto clothes, or mold/mildew from a dirty drum
Fix:
- Run a hot drum cleaning cycle with Affresh Washing Machine Cleaner to remove buildup
- Reduce or eliminate fabric softener use
- Clean the detergent drawer — buildup in the drawer can drip onto clothes
- For the affected clothes: rewash with a stain remover applied to the marks before washing
Type 3: Brown or Rust-Colored Marks
Cause: Rust inside the drum from a chipped drum coating, rust in the water supply, or rust on the drum baffles
Fix:
- Inspect the drum interior for chips or rust spots — run your hand along the drum surface
- If the drum is rusting, contact a repair technician — a rusted drum needs professional attention
- For rust from the water supply: install a water filter on the inlet hose
Type 4: Blue or Purple Stains
Cause: Fabric softener dispensing directly onto clothes instead of diluting properly, or a blocked softener compartment
Fix:
- Clean the fabric softener compartment in the detergent drawer — it may be blocked
- Dilute fabric softener with water before adding to the drawer
- Reduce the amount of fabric softener used
Type 5: Oily or Waxy Marks
Cause: Residue from a previous load (e.g., someone washed something oily), or buildup inside the drum
Fix:
- Run a hot empty cycle with Affresh or white vinegar to clean the drum
- Rewash affected clothes with a degreasing dish soap applied to the marks
General Prevention Tips
- Clean the drum monthly with Affresh to prevent buildup from depositing on clothes
- Always measure detergent accurately — use a measuring cup or switch to pre-measured pods
- Don't overload the machine — clothes can't rinse properly in an overfull drum
- Check pockets before washing — pens, lipstick, and tissues cause marks
