Signs of Cockroach Infestation in Kitchen

Cockroaches are nocturnal and spend most of their time hidden in harborages. Seeing a single cockroach during the day is often a sign of a significant infestation — daytime sightings typically mean the harborage is overcrowded and roaches are being pushed out. Knowing the signs helps you catch an infestation early, before it becomes severe.

Sign 1: Cockroach Droppings

Cockroach droppings are one of the most reliable indicators of an infestation. They look like:

• Small roaches (German cockroaches): Tiny dark specks resembling coffee grounds or black pepper, often found in corners, along shelf edges, and inside cabinet hinges
• Large roaches (American cockroaches): Cylindrical droppings with ridged sides, about 2mm long, found along baseboards and under appliances

The more droppings you find, the larger the infestation.

Sign 2: Egg Cases (Oothecae)

Cockroach egg cases are brown, capsule-shaped structures about 8–10mm long. Each case contains 16–48 eggs depending on the species. They're typically found glued to surfaces in hidden areas: inside cabinet hinges, behind the refrigerator, under shelf liners, and along the back wall of cabinets. Finding egg cases indicates an established, breeding infestation.

Sign 3: Musty Odor

A large cockroach infestation produces a distinctive musty, oily odor from their pheromones and secretions. If your kitchen has an unexplained musty smell that doesn't go away after cleaning, cockroaches may be the source. The smell is strongest near the harborage.

Sign 4: Smear Marks

In areas with high moisture, cockroaches leave dark, irregular smear marks as they travel along walls and surfaces. These are most visible along the bottom of walls, behind appliances, and inside cabinets near the back.

Sign 5: Shed Skins

Cockroaches molt (shed their exoskeleton) multiple times as they grow. Translucent, cockroach-shaped shed skins found in hidden areas indicate an active, growing population.

Sign 6: Seeing Live Cockroaches During the Day

Cockroaches are nocturnal. Seeing one during daylight hours almost always means the harborage is overcrowded — a sign of a significant infestation that requires immediate treatment.

Sign 7: Damaged Food Packaging

Cockroaches chew through cardboard, thin plastic, and paper packaging to access food. Finding gnaw marks or holes in food packaging is a clear sign of cockroach activity.

What to Do If You Find These Signs

Act immediately. Cockroach populations grow exponentially — a pair of German cockroaches can produce thousands of offspring in a year under ideal conditions.

2. Set Tomcat Glue Boards to monitor activity and pinpoint the harborage
3. Apply Ecoxall Boric Acid in cracks, crevices, and along baseboards
4. Transfer all food to airtight containers and deep clean the kitchen
5. Seal all gaps with silicone caulk
