How to Wash Weighted Blanket

Can You Wash a Weighted Blanket at Home?

Most weighted blankets can be washed at home — but their weight (typically 5–25 lbs) means you need a large-capacity washing machine. A standard home washer can usually handle blankets up to 15–18 lbs. Heavier blankets may need a commercial machine at a laundromat. Always check the care label first.

Types of Weighted Blanket Fill

The fill type determines how you wash it:

  • Glass beads: Most common; machine washable in most cases
  • Plastic poly pellets: Machine washable; avoid high heat which can melt pellets
  • Steel shot beads: Machine washable; heavier, may need commercial machine
  • Organic fills (rice, beans, sand): Usually not washable — spot clean only

Step 1: Check for Damage Before Washing

Inspect all seams and stitching before washing. A damaged seam will allow fill to escape during the wash cycle, potentially damaging your machine. Repair any loose stitching before washing.

Step 2: Machine Wash on Gentle

  • Use a front-loading machine if possible — top-loaders with agitators can stress the seams of heavy blankets
  • Select the gentle cycle with warm water (cold for blankets with plastic pellets)
  • Use a mild liquid detergent — a small amount is sufficient
  • Place in a large mesh laundry bag if it fits, to protect seams during the cycle
  • Run an extra rinse cycle to remove all detergent from the fill

Step 3: Dry Thoroughly — This Takes Time

Weighted blankets take significantly longer to dry than regular blankets due to their density. Tumble dry on low heat with wool dryer balls to improve airflow and prevent fill from clumping:

  • Check every 30 minutes and redistribute the fill by shaking and fluffing
  • Expect 3–5 drying cycles for a fully dry weighted blanket
  • Test by pressing firmly in multiple areas — no cool or damp spots should remain
  • Never store a damp weighted blanket — the dense fill holds moisture and develops mildew quickly

How Often Should You Wash a Weighted Blanket?

  • With a removable cover: wash the cover monthly, the blanket itself every 2–3 months
  • Without a cover: wash every 2–4 weeks if used nightly
  • Immediately after illness or visible soiling

Quick Tips for Weighted Blanket Care

  • Use a removable duvet-style cover to protect the blanket and reduce washing frequency
  • Air out between washes by hanging over a railing or laying flat in a ventilated area
  • Store flat or loosely folded — avoid compressing for long periods
  • If the blanket is too heavy for your home machine, use a laundromat's large-capacity washer
