How to Wash Towels Properly

How Often Should You Wash Towels?

Bath towels should be washed after every 3–4 uses. Hand towels and kitchen towels should be washed more frequently — every 1–2 days, as they're used more often and by multiple people. Gym towels should be washed after every use. A damp towel left hanging develops bacteria and mildew within 24–48 hours, which is why towels develop that musty smell even when they look clean.

Step 1: Wash Towels Separately

Wash towels separately from clothing — the lint from towels transfers to clothes, and the zippers and buttons on clothing can snag towel loops. Wash similar colors together to prevent color transfer.

Step 2: Use the Right Water Temperature

  • White towels: Hot water (140°F / 60°C) kills bacteria and keeps them bright
  • Colored towels: Warm water (104°F / 40°C) cleans effectively while preserving color
  • Hot water is especially important for kitchen towels and gym towels that carry more bacteria

Step 3: Use the Right Amount of Detergent

Too much detergent is one of the most common causes of stiff, less-absorbent towels. Excess detergent builds up in the fibers and reduces their ability to absorb water. Use half the recommended amount of liquid detergent for towels — they don't need as much as clothing.

Step 4: Skip the Fabric Softener

Fabric softener coats towel fibers with a waxy residue that reduces absorbency over time — the opposite of what you want. Instead, add ½ cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Vinegar dissolves detergent buildup, naturally softens fibers, and eliminates musty odors without reducing absorbency.

Step 5: Dry Thoroughly

Towels must be completely dry before folding and storing — even slightly damp towels develop mildew quickly. Tumble dry on medium to high heat with wool dryer balls to keep them fluffy and reduce drying time. Shake towels out before putting them in the dryer to help the loops open up and dry evenly.

How to Restore Stiff or Musty Towels

If your towels are already stiff or smell musty, try this reset wash:

  1. Wash on hot with 1 cup of white vinegar — no detergent
  2. Run a second hot wash with ½ cup of baking soda — no detergent
  3. Dry thoroughly with wool dryer balls

This strips detergent and mineral buildup from the fibers and restores softness and absorbency in most cases.

Quick Tips for Fluffy, Fresh Towels

  • Hang towels to dry fully between uses — never leave them in a pile
  • Use a proper towel bar or hooks to allow full airflow on both sides
  • Wash new towels before first use to remove manufacturing finishes that reduce absorbency
  • Replace towels every 1–2 years — fibers break down and harbor bacteria over time
