How to Wash Gym Clothes

How to Wash Gym Clothes

Why Gym Clothes Are Hard to Clean

Gym clothes are designed to wick moisture away from your skin — but that same synthetic fabric structure that makes them great for working out also traps sweat, body oils, and bacteria deep in the fibers. Regular detergent often can't fully penetrate these fibers, which is why gym clothes can smell fine coming out of the wash but reek again the moment you start sweating in them.

Step 1: Don't Let Sweaty Gym Clothes Sit

The longer sweaty gym clothes sit in a pile or gym bag, the deeper bacteria work into the fibers and the harder odor becomes to remove. Ideally, wash gym clothes the same day. If that's not possible, at minimum spread them out to air dry rather than leaving them balled up in a bag.

Step 2: Turn Inside Out and Pre-Soak for Heavy Odor

Turn all gym clothes inside out before washing — this exposes the interior surface where sweat and bacteria accumulate directly to the detergent.

For heavily odorous items, pre-soak in cold water with ½ cup of white vinegar for 30 minutes before washing. The vinegar breaks down odor compounds and helps loosen bacteria from synthetic fibers.

Step 3: Use a Sport-Specific Detergent

This is the most important step for gym clothes. Standard detergents are formulated for cotton and leave a residue on synthetic fibers that actually traps more odor over time. Use HEX Performance Sport Gear Wash — it's specifically engineered to penetrate synthetic fabrics, break down sweat compounds, and eliminate odor at the source rather than masking it.

Step 4: Wash in Cold Water on Gentle Cycle

  • Always use cold water — heat sets odors and degrades elastic fibers
  • Use the gentle or delicate cycle to minimize friction and pilling
  • Avoid overloading the machine — gym clothes need room to rinse properly
  • Never use fabric softener — it coats synthetic fibers and reduces moisture-wicking performance

Step 5: Add Laundry Sanitizer for Extra Odor Elimination

For gym clothes with persistent odor or after illness, add Lysol Laundry Sanitizer to the rinse cycle. It kills 99.9% of odor-causing bacteria even in cold water without bleaching or damaging synthetic fabrics.

Step 6: Air Dry Only

Never put gym clothes in the dryer. Heat:

  • Degrades elastic and spandex fibers, reducing compression and stretch
  • Can melt or warp synthetic fabric structures
  • Sets any remaining odors into the fabric permanently

Hang or lay flat to air dry at room temperature. Most synthetic gym clothes dry quickly — usually within 1–2 hours.

How to Restore Gym Clothes That Permanently Smell

If your gym clothes smell even when clean, try this reset wash:

  1. Soak in cold water with 1 cup of white vinegar for 1 hour
  2. Drain and wash with HEX Performance Gear Wash on a cold gentle cycle
  3. Add Lysol Laundry Sanitizer to the rinse cycle
  4. Air dry completely

Repeat 2–3 times for severely affected items. Most gym clothes can be restored even after years of odor buildup.

Quick Tips for Fresh Gym Clothes

  • Wash after every single wear — no exceptions
  • Never use fabric softener on activewear
  • Use less detergent than you think — excess detergent residue traps odor
  • Air out gym shoes after every workout to prevent odor transfer to clothes
