How to Wash Duvet

How to Wash Duvet

Duvet vs. Comforter: What's the Difference?

A duvet is a soft flat bag filled with down, feathers, or synthetic fibers — typically used inside a removable duvet cover. A comforter is similar but usually has a decorative outer fabric and is used without a separate cover. The washing approach is nearly identical, but duvets are often easier to care for because the cover takes most of the daily wear.

How Often Should You Wash a Duvet?

If you use a duvet cover (which you should), wash the duvet itself every 3–6 months. Wash the duvet cover monthly — it's what actually contacts your skin. Without a cover, wash the duvet every 1–2 months.

Step 1: Check the Care Label

Most modern duvets are machine washable. Check for:

  • Maximum wash temperature
  • Whether tumble drying is allowed
  • Any dry clean only instructions — follow these strictly

Also check for any tears or loose seams before washing — repair these first to prevent fill from escaping.

Step 2: Use Duvet Clips to Prevent Bunching

Before putting the duvet in the machine, use duvet clips to secure the corners of the duvet to the corners of the duvet cover if washing them together. This prevents the duvet from bunching up inside the cover during washing and drying — a common problem that results in uneven cleaning and clumping.

Step 3: Machine Wash on Gentle

  • Use a large-capacity front-loading machine — the duvet needs room to move
  • Select the gentle cycle with cool or warm water (check label)
  • Use a small amount of mild liquid detergent — for down duvets, use a down-specific detergent
  • Run an extra rinse cycle to remove all detergent residue
  • If the machine is too small, take the duvet to a laundromat with a large-capacity machine

Step 4: Dry Thoroughly with Wool Dryer Balls

Drying is the most important step — a damp duvet develops mildew quickly. Place in the dryer with 3–4 wool dryer balls:

  • Dry on low heat
  • Check every 30 minutes and break up clumps by hand
  • Expect 2–3 full drying cycles for a thick duvet
  • Test for dryness by pressing firmly in multiple areas — no cool or damp spots should remain

How to Store a Duvet

  • Store in a breathable cotton storage bag — never in plastic which traps moisture
  • Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
  • Don't compress — store loosely to preserve loft
  • Air out before storing at the end of the season

Quick Tips for Duvet Care

  • Always use a duvet cover — it protects the duvet and reduces washing frequency dramatically
  • Shake and fluff your duvet daily to maintain even fill distribution
  • Air outside on a dry, breezy day between washes to freshen naturally
  • Use duvet clips to keep the duvet in place inside the cover during use
