How to Unshrink Cotton Clothes

Can You Unshrink Cotton?

Yes — in many cases, you can partially or fully restore shrunken cotton clothes. The key is relaxing the cotton fibers so they can be gently stretched back to their original dimensions. This works best on lightly to moderately shrunk items. Severely shrunk garments (more than 10%) may only be partially recoverable.

Method 1: Hair Conditioner Soak (Most Effective)

Hair conditioner relaxes and lubricates cotton fibers, making them pliable enough to stretch back to their original size.

  1. Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water — not hot, not cold
  2. Add 1–2 tablespoons of regular hair conditioner and mix until dissolved
  3. Submerge the shrunken garment and let soak for 20–30 minutes
  4. Do not rinse — the conditioner needs to stay in the fibers
  5. Gently press out excess water (don't wring)
  6. Lay flat on a clean dry towel
  7. Gently stretch the garment back toward its original dimensions while it's still wet — work slowly and evenly, pulling from the seams
  8. Pin or weight the edges to hold the stretched shape
  9. Allow to air dry completely in the stretched position

Method 2: Baby Shampoo Soak

Baby shampoo works similarly to hair conditioner — it's gentle and helps relax cotton fibers.

  1. Fill a basin with lukewarm water
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of baby shampoo and mix
  3. Soak the garment for 30 minutes
  4. Gently press out excess water without rinsing
  5. Stretch gently back to original dimensions and lay flat to dry

Method 3: Steam and Stretch

A garment steamer can help relax cotton fibers enough to allow gentle stretching:

  1. Hang the shrunken garment on a hanger
  2. Hold the steamer 1–2 inches from the fabric and steam a section
  3. While the fabric is warm and damp from the steam, gently pull and stretch that section back toward its original size
  4. Work section by section around the entire garment
  5. Lay flat to finish drying in the stretched position

Tips for Best Results

  • Act quickly: Freshly shrunk cotton is easier to restore than cotton that has been washed and dried multiple times in its shrunken state
  • Be patient and gentle: Stretch slowly and evenly. Pulling too hard can distort the weave or tear the fabric
  • Work from the seams: Pull from the seam edges rather than the middle of the fabric for more even stretching
  • Repeat if needed: For significantly shrunk items, you may need to repeat the process 2–3 times

Prevent Future Shrinkage

Once you've restored your garment, prevent it from shrinking again:

  • Always wash in cold water with a gentle detergent like Molly's Suds Liquid Laundry Detergent
  • Use a gentle cycle and low spin speed
  • Air dry or tumble dry on the lowest heat setting
  • Remove from the dryer while still slightly damp

When Unshrinking Won't Work

Some shrinkage is permanent and cannot be reversed:

  • Severe shrinkage (more than 10–15%)
  • Cotton that has been washed and dried on high heat many times
  • Felted cotton (where fibers have matted together)
  • Cotton blends where the other fiber type has also shrunk

Final Thoughts

Unshrinking cotton is often possible with a hair conditioner soak and gentle stretching. The sooner you treat it after shrinking, the better your results will be. Once restored, switch to cold water washing and low heat drying to keep your cotton fitting perfectly going forward.
