How to Unshrink a Wool Sweater

Why Wool Shrinks (and Why It Can Be Fixed)
Wool shrinks when heat and agitation cause the scales on wool fibers to interlock and tighten — a process called felting. Unlike synthetic fabrics, wool fibers can often be relaxed and separated again with the right treatment, making unshrinking wool one of the more successful fabric rescue operations.
What You'll Need
- Lukewarm water (never hot)
- Hair conditioner or baby shampoo (2–3 tablespoons)
- A clean towel
- A flat surface for drying
Step-by-Step: How to Unshrink a Wool Sweater
- Fill a basin with lukewarm water. Temperature is critical — hot water will cause further felting. Lukewarm is the maximum.
- Add 2–3 tablespoons of hair conditioner. Conditioner contains ingredients that coat and relax wool fibers, making them pliable enough to stretch. Mix gently into the water.
- Submerge the sweater. Gently press it down until fully saturated. Let it soak for 30 minutes without agitating — movement causes further felting.
- Remove without wringing. Lift the sweater out and gently press against the basin to remove excess water. Never wring or twist wool.
- Roll in a towel. Lay the sweater flat on a clean dry towel and roll it up to absorb more water. Press gently. Unroll.
- Stretch back to shape. Lay the sweater flat on a dry surface. Gently stretch it back toward its original dimensions — length, width, sleeves. Work slowly and evenly. Measure against a similar sweater if you have one.
- Pin or weight the edges to hold the stretched shape while drying.
- Air dry flat, away from heat. Never hang a wet wool sweater — the weight will stretch it unevenly. Keep away from direct sunlight and radiators.
How Much Can You Recover?
For mild shrinkage (one size down), full recovery is often possible. For severe shrinkage or heavily felted wool, you may recover 50–80% of the original size. Heavily felted wool — where the fibers have fully interlocked — cannot be fully unshrunk.
For Wool Sweaters You Want to Keep Long-Term
Use a specialist wool wash detergent for regular cleaning — it's formulated to be gentle on wool fibers and won't cause the shrinkage that regular detergents can. Always wash wool on a cold, gentle cycle or by hand, and always air dry flat.
Prevention Tips
- Always check the care label before washing wool.
- Use cold water and a gentle cycle, or hand wash.
- Use a mesh laundry bag to reduce agitation in the machine.
- Never put wool in the dryer.
- Air dry flat every time.
Final Thoughts
Unshrinking a wool sweater is one of the most achievable clothing rescues. The conditioner soak relaxes the fibers, and patient stretching does the rest. Act quickly after shrinkage occurs — the sooner you treat it, the better the result.
