How to Store Suits Properly

Why Suits Need Special Storage
A well-made suit is one of the most expensive items in a wardrobe — and one of the most vulnerable to poor storage. Crushing, folding, or hanging on the wrong hanger can permanently distort the shoulders, flatten the lapels, and ruin the silhouette. Proper storage keeps a suit looking sharp and extends its life significantly.
Step 1: Air Out After Wearing
Never put a suit straight back into the wardrobe after wearing. Hang it on a wide hanger in a well-ventilated area for at least a few hours to allow body heat and moisture to dissipate. This prevents odor buildup and fabric breakdown over time.
Step 2: Use the Right Hanger
Always hang suits on wide, contoured hangers that match the shape of the shoulders. Narrow hangers — including wire hangers — create pressure points that distort the shoulder shape permanently. Slim velvet hangers work well for suit jackets as they grip the fabric and prevent slipping without taking up excessive rod space.
Step 3: Use a Garment Bag for Long-Term Storage
For suits you wear infrequently or are storing seasonally, use a breathable garment bag. Garment bags protect against dust, light, and accidental snags while allowing airflow. Avoid plastic dry-cleaning bags for long-term storage — they trap moisture and can cause mildew and fabric damage.
Step 4: Store Trousers Correctly
Suit trousers can be hung from the waistband using a trouser hanger, or folded over the bar of a hanger along the crease line. Hanging from the waistband is better for maintaining the crease. If folding, fold along the natural crease — never create a new fold line.
Step 5: Add Cedar Protection
Add cedar blocks to your wardrobe to deter moths, which are attracted to the wool in suit fabric. Cedar is chemical-free and won't damage fabric or leave odors on your suit.
What to Avoid
- Wire or narrow hangers (distort shoulders)
- Plastic dry-cleaning bags for long-term storage (trap moisture)
- Folding suits (creates permanent creases)
- Overcrowding the wardrobe (crushes fabric and lapels)
- Storing dirty (attracts moths, causes staining)
Quick Tips
- Brush the suit with a soft clothes brush after wearing to remove surface dust and lint before hanging.
- Rotate suits regularly so the same suit isn't worn multiple days in a row — fabric needs time to recover its shape.
- Have suits dry-cleaned no more than once or twice a year — over-cleaning breaks down the fabric.
Final Thoughts
Suit storage is straightforward: air out after wearing, hang on a proper hanger, use a breathable garment bag for long-term storage, and add cedar protection. These habits will keep a quality suit looking sharp for a decade or more.
