How to Soften Scratchy Wool
Share
Scratchy wool is one of the most common complaints about wool garments — but it doesn't have to be permanent. Here's why wool feels scratchy and how to soften it at home.
Why Wool Feels Scratchy
Wool fibers have microscopic scales on their surface. Coarser wool (like standard Merino or lambswool) has more pronounced scales that can irritate sensitive skin. Finer wool (like high-grade Merino or cashmere) has smoother scales and feels softer. Scratchiness can also be caused by:
- Washing in hot water — opens and roughens the fiber scales
- Harsh detergents — strip natural lanolin from the fibers
- Machine washing without a delicate cycle — increases fiber friction
- New wool that hasn't been broken in yet
Method 1: Soak in Conditioner (Most Effective)
- Fill a basin with cool water.
- Add 2–3 tablespoons of hair conditioner or fabric softener. Mix gently.
- Submerge the wool garment and soak for 30 minutes.
- Do not rinse — leave a small amount of conditioner in the fibers to maintain softness.
- Gently press out excess water — never wring.
- Roll in a towel to absorb more water.
- Lay flat on a sweater drying rack and reshape. Air dry.
Method 2: Use Wool-Specific Detergent
Switching to a wool-specific detergent preserves the natural lanolin in wool fibers — the oil that keeps wool soft. Regular detergents strip lanolin, making wool feel rougher over time. Washing with wool detergent regularly maintains softness.
Method 3: Freeze It
Place the clean, dry wool garment in a sealed bag and freeze for 24–48 hours. The cold causes the fiber scales to contract slightly, reducing scratchiness. This works best for new wool that hasn't been broken in yet.
Method 4: Wear It In
Some wool simply needs to be worn and washed a few times before it softens. The fiber scales gradually smooth with use. Wear the garment over a long-sleeved shirt initially to reduce skin contact while it breaks in.
Preventing Scratchiness
- Always wash wool in cool water with wool detergent.
- Add a small amount of fabric softener to the rinse water occasionally.
- Avoid hot water and the dryer — both roughen wool fibers.
- Store wool properly — avoid compression that can mat fibers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does wool get softer over time?
Yes — most wool softens with wear and washing. The fiber scales gradually smooth with use. Soaking in conditioner accelerates this process significantly.
Will conditioner damage wool?
No — hair conditioner is safe for wool. It coats the fiber scales, reducing friction and making the wool feel softer. Use a small amount and don't rinse completely for best results.
Why does my wool feel scratchy after washing?
Usually caused by hot water (roughens fiber scales), harsh detergent (strips lanolin), or insufficient rinsing (soap residue). Switch to cool water and wool-specific detergent for future washes.
Is scratchy wool lower quality?
Not necessarily — scratchiness depends on fiber diameter (micron count), not quality per se. Finer fibers (lower micron count) feel softer. Cashmere and fine Merino are naturally soft. Coarser wool breeds produce scratchier fibers regardless of quality.
Can I soften wool that has already been washed many times?
Yes — the conditioner soak method works on wool at any stage. Soak for 30 minutes in cool water with conditioner, don't fully rinse, and lay flat to dry.
