How to Sharpen Kitchen Scissors

When Kitchen Scissors Need Sharpening
Kitchen scissors dull over time from cutting through packaging, herbs, poultry bones, and other materials. Dull scissors tear rather than cut cleanly, require more force, and are actually more dangerous than sharp ones. Here's how to sharpen them at home.
What You'll Need
- Knife sharpener with scissors slot (if available)
- Fine-grit sharpening stone or whetstone
- Aluminum foil (for quick touch-up)
- A glass jar or bottle (for quick touch-up)
Method 1: Aluminum Foil (Quick Touch-Up)
This is the fastest method for a quick edge refresh:
- Fold a sheet of aluminum foil into 6–8 layers
- Cut through the folded foil repeatedly with the scissors — 10–12 cuts
- The foil microscopically abrades and realigns the blade edges
- Test on paper — the scissors should cut more cleanly
This works for light dulling and is a good maintenance method between proper sharpenings.
Method 2: Glass Jar or Bottle Neck
- Open the scissors and place one blade inside the neck of a glass jar or bottle
- Draw the blade along the glass rim from pivot to tip, applying light pressure
- Repeat 5–10 times on each blade
- The glass acts as a fine abrasive to sharpen the edge
Method 3: Sharpening Stone
For a proper sharpening:
- Disassemble the scissors if possible
- Hold one blade flat against the sharpening stone at the original bevel angle (usually 20–25 degrees)
- Stroke from pivot to tip along the stone, maintaining the angle
- Repeat 5–10 strokes per blade
- Reassemble and test
Method 4: Pull-Through Sharpener with Scissors Slot
Some knife sharpeners like the 4-in-1 sharpener include a scissors sharpening slot. Insert one blade at a time and pull through according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Testing Sharpness
- Cut through a sheet of paper — sharp scissors cut cleanly with no tearing
- Cut fresh herbs — sharp scissors cut cleanly without crushing
Final Thoughts
The aluminum foil method is the quickest fix for mildly dull scissors. A sharpening stone gives the best results for significantly dull blades. Sharpen when scissors start tearing rather than cutting, and clean and oil the pivot after sharpening.
