How to Remove Static from Clothes

Why Clothes Get Static
Static electricity builds up when fabrics rub together and transfer electrons — most commonly in the dryer, or when wearing synthetic fabrics in dry conditions. The result: clothes that cling, spark, and attract lint and pet hair. Static is worse in winter when indoor air is dry, and with synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon.
Quick Fixes (When You're Already Dressed)
- Anti-static spray: The fastest solution. Bounce anti-static spray eliminates static instantly and also releases wrinkles and freshens fabric. Spray lightly on the outside of the garment and allow to dry for 30 seconds before wearing.
- Damp hands: Run slightly damp hands over the static-affected area. The moisture neutralizes the static charge temporarily.
- Metal hanger trick: Run a wire hanger between your body and the garment. The metal conducts the static charge away from the fabric.
- Lotion on skin: Apply unscented lotion to your legs or arms before putting on a static-prone garment. Moisturized skin doesn't generate as much static.
- Safety pin: Pin a small safety pin to the inside seam of the garment. Metal conducts static away from the fabric.
Laundry Solutions (Prevent Static at the Source)
- Wool dryer balls: Add wool dryer balls to the dryer instead of dryer sheets. They separate clothes during tumbling, reducing friction and static buildup.
- Dryer sheets: Dryer sheets coat fabric with a thin layer of lubricant that reduces friction and static. Add one per load.
- White vinegar in the rinse cycle: Add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Vinegar neutralizes static-causing residue from detergent and softens fabric naturally.
- Don't over-dry: Over-drying is the main cause of dryer static. Remove clothes while still slightly damp and allow to finish air drying.
- Separate synthetics: Wash and dry synthetic fabrics separately from natural fibers to reduce fiber-to-fiber static transfer.
Long-Term Prevention
- Use a humidifier in winter — dry air dramatically increases static buildup.
- Choose natural fiber clothing (cotton, wool, linen) over synthetics when static is a persistent problem.
- Store clothes properly — clothes packed tightly together generate static from friction.
Final Thoughts
Anti-static spray is the fastest fix for static you're dealing with right now. For long-term prevention, wool dryer balls, avoiding over-drying, and adding vinegar to the rinse cycle address the root cause. In very dry climates or winter months, a humidifier makes a significant difference.
