How to Remove Smell from Second Hand Clothes
Share
Why Second-Hand Clothes Smell
Second-hand clothes can carry a range of odors: the previous owner's detergent or fabric softener, storage mustiness, body odor, smoke, or the distinctive smell of thrift stores. Most of these odors can be completely eliminated with the right treatment — often in a single wash.
Method 1: White Vinegar Soak (Best First Step)
White vinegar is one of the most effective natural odor neutralizers. It breaks down odor-causing compounds without leaving its own scent once dry.
- Fill a basin with cool water and add one cup of white vinegar.
- Submerge the garment and soak for 30–60 minutes.
- Wash as normal with a good detergent.
- Air dry — the vinegar smell disappears completely as the garment dries.
Method 2: Baking Soda Wash
Add half a cup of baking soda to the wash cycle along with your regular detergent. Baking soda neutralizes acidic and alkaline odors and works well for general mustiness and body odor.
Method 3: OxiClean Soak (For Stubborn Odors)
For persistent odors that don't respond to vinegar or baking soda:
- Soak in OxiClean solution for 1–6 hours.
- Wash as normal.
- Air dry.
Method 4: Odor Eliminator Spray (For Items That Can't Be Washed)
For structured garments, vintage pieces, or items that can't be machine washed, Zero Odor eliminator spray neutralizes odors on contact without masking them. Spray lightly, allow to dry, and repeat if needed.
Method 5: Fresh Air and Sunlight
Hanging clothes outside in fresh air and sunlight for several hours is surprisingly effective for mild odors. UV light kills odor-causing bacteria, and airflow carries away volatile odor compounds. This works particularly well for musty storage smells.
For Specific Odors
- Cigarette smoke: Requires a dedicated treatment — see our guide on removing cigarette smell from clothes.
- Mildew: White vinegar soak followed by an OxiClean wash is most effective.
- Strong perfume: Baking soda wash and air drying usually resolves this.
Final Thoughts
Most second-hand clothing odors respond well to a white vinegar soak followed by a normal wash. For stubborn odors, OxiClean provides stronger treatment. Fresh air and sunlight are underrated and free. Combine methods for the most persistent smells.
