How to Remove Mold from Fabric

Mold on Fabric: Clothes vs. Upholstery vs. Curtains

Mold can grow on any fabric that stays damp — clothes, upholstery, curtains, cushion covers, and outdoor furniture fabric. The treatment approach is similar across all fabric types, but the method of application differs depending on whether the fabric is washable or fixed in place. Here's the complete guide for all fabric types.

What You'll Need

Method 1: Washable Fabric (Clothes, Cushion Covers, Curtains)

  1. Take outside and brush off loose spores with a soft brush. Do this outdoors to avoid spreading spores indoors.
  2. Spray with white vinegar. Fill a spray bottle with undiluted Heinz White Vinegar and saturate the moldy areas. Let sit 1 hour.
  3. Apply hydrogen peroxide to any remaining mold stains. Hydrogen peroxide kills mold and lifts staining. Let fizz 10–15 minutes.
  4. For stubborn staining: Apply RMR-86 Pro carefully per product instructions.
  5. Machine wash on the hottest setting the fabric allows. Add an OxiClean White Revive Power Pak for white fabrics.
  6. Dry completely in sunlight.

Method 2: Fixed Fabric (Upholstery, Sofa, Car Seats)

  1. Vacuum the moldy area first using a vacuum with a HEPA filter to remove loose spores. Dispose of the vacuum bag immediately.
  2. Spray with white vinegar. Apply undiluted white vinegar to the moldy fabric using a spray bottle. Let sit 1 hour.
  3. Blot with a clean microfiber cloth. Work from outside in.
  4. Apply hydrogen peroxide to any remaining stains. Blot after 10 minutes.
  5. For stubborn mold staining on upholstery: Apply RMR-141 Disinfectant from the bundle — safe for fabric surfaces and kills mold spores on contact.
  6. Allow to dry completely with windows open and a fan running. Never cover or use the furniture until fully dry.

Method 3: Outdoor Fabric (Garden Furniture, Awnings)

  1. Hose down to remove loose mold.
  2. Apply RMR-86 Pro per instructions — outdoor fabrics are generally more durable and can handle stronger treatments.
  3. Scrub with a soft brush, rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry completely in sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does white vinegar kill mold on fabric?

Yes — white vinegar kills up to 82% of mold species on contact. It's one of the safest and most effective treatments for mold on fabric, especially for colored or delicate materials where stronger chemicals might cause damage.

Can mold permanently damage fabric?

Yes — if left untreated, mold can weaken fabric fibers and cause permanent staining. Act as soon as you notice mold growth. Fresh mold is much easier to remove than old, deeply embedded mold.

Is it safe to use RMR-86 on colored fabric?

RMR-86 Pro is very powerful and can lighten colored fabrics. Always test on a hidden area first. For colored fabrics, white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide are safer first choices.
