Marker Stains: Know Your Marker Type
Not all markers are the same — and the treatment depends on whether it's washable, permanent, or dry-erase. Permanent markers (like Sharpie) are alcohol-based and the hardest to remove. Washable markers come out easily. Here's how to handle all types.
What You'll Need
- 99% Isopropyl Alcohol
- Carbona Liquid Stain Devils
- Dawn Ultra Dish Soap
- OxiClean White Revive Power Paks (for white fabrics)
- Microfiber cloths
- Cotton balls or cotton pads
Method 1: Permanent Marker (Sharpie) on Clothes
Permanent marker is alcohol-based — so alcohol is your best weapon.
- Place a clean cloth under the stained area to absorb ink as it lifts.
- Apply isopropyl alcohol generously. Dab 99% Isopropyl Alcohol onto the stain with a cotton ball. Work from the outside in.
- Blot repeatedly with clean sections of cloth. You'll see the ink transferring — keep going until no more lifts.
- Apply Carbona Stain Devils for any remaining residue. Let sit 10 minutes, then blot.
- Apply Dawn dish soap, work in gently, rinse with cold water.
- Machine wash cold. For white fabrics, add OxiClean White Revive to the wash. Check before drying.
Method 2: Washable Marker on Clothes
Washable markers are water-based and much easier to remove.
- Rinse immediately with cold water from the back of the fabric.
- Apply Carbona Stain Devils and let sit 5–10 minutes.
- Blot and rinse. The stain should lift easily.
- Machine wash cold.
Method 3: Dry-Erase Marker on Clothes
Dry-erase markers are also alcohol-based — treat the same as permanent marker with isopropyl alcohol.
Tips for Different Fabric Types
- Cotton: Full method works well; most forgiving fabric
- Polyester: Alcohol works but test first — some synthetics react to alcohol
- White fabric: Follow with OxiClean White Revive soak for best results
- Delicates: Use alcohol very sparingly; test on hidden area first
Frequently Asked Questions
Can permanent marker be fully removed from clothes?
Often yes, especially on cotton. 99% Isopropyl Alcohol is the most effective treatment. Results depend on the fabric type and how long the stain has been there — fresh stains come out much more completely than old ones.
Does rubbing alcohol damage fabric?
Isopropyl alcohol is safe for most fabrics including cotton, polyester, and denim. Always test on a hidden area first for delicates or brightly colored fabrics, as it can occasionally affect dyes.
Why doesn't washing remove permanent marker?
Permanent marker is alcohol-based and bonds strongly to fabric fibers. Regular detergent and water can't dissolve it — you need an alcohol-based solvent like isopropyl alcohol to break the bond first.
