How to Remove Cigarette Smell from Clothes
Share
Why Cigarette Smell Is So Stubborn
Cigarette smoke contains hundreds of chemical compounds that penetrate fabric fibers deeply and bond to them. Unlike surface odors, smoke smell doesn't just sit on top of the fabric — it's embedded in the fiber structure, which is why a single normal wash often isn't enough to remove it completely.
Method 1: White Vinegar Soak (Best Starting Point)
- Fill a basin or bathtub with cool water and add two cups of white vinegar.
- Submerge the garment completely and soak for 1–3 hours — longer for heavily smoked items.
- Wash as normal with a good detergent.
- Air dry — don't use the dryer until the smell is completely gone, as heat can set remaining odors.
Method 2: Baking Soda Treatment
For dry-clean-only items or as a pre-treatment:
- Place the garment in a large sealed bag or bin.
- Add half a cup of baking soda.
- Seal and shake to distribute the baking soda.
- Leave for 24–48 hours — the baking soda absorbs odor compounds from the fabric.
- Remove and shake out the baking soda, then wash or air out as appropriate.
Method 3: OxiClean Soak (For Washable Items)
For persistent smoke smell on washable garments:
- Soak in OxiClean solution for 3–6 hours.
- Wash with a detergent that has odor-fighting properties like Arm & Hammer plus OxiClean with Odor Blasters.
- Air dry completely before assessing.
Method 4: Odor Eliminator Spray (For Non-Washable Items)
For structured garments, leather, or items that can't be washed, Zero Odor eliminator spray neutralizes smoke odor molecules rather than masking them. Spray thoroughly, allow to dry completely, and repeat if needed.
Method 5: Fresh Air and Sunlight
Hang the garment outside in fresh air and direct sunlight for several hours. UV light breaks down odor-causing compounds and airflow carries them away. This works well for mild smoke smell and as a follow-up treatment after washing.
For Very Heavily Smoked Items
Combine methods: vinegar soak, then OxiClean wash, then air dry in sunlight. For items that still smell after multiple treatments, professional dry cleaning with an odor treatment is the next step.
Final Thoughts
Cigarette smell requires more aggressive treatment than most odors. A long vinegar soak followed by an odor-fighting detergent wash removes most smoke smell. For stubborn cases, OxiClean soak and outdoor air drying in sunlight complete the job. Never use the dryer until the smell is completely gone.
