How to Remove Burnt Smell from Air Fryer

Why Air Fryers Develop Burnt Smells
A burnt smell from your air fryer almost always comes from one of these sources: grease buildup on the heating coil or interior walls burning during cooking, food residue left in the basket or drawer from a previous cook, a new air fryer burning off manufacturing coatings during its first few uses, or food that has dripped onto the heating element. Identifying the source is the first step to eliminating the smell permanently.
Step 1: Clean the Air Fryer Thoroughly First
No deodorizing method will work if the source of the smell is still inside the machine. Before trying any odor-elimination technique, do a full clean:
- Soak the basket and drawer in hot soapy water for 30 minutes.
- Apply baking soda paste to any baked-on grease and let sit before wiping.
- Turn the air fryer upside down and gently brush the heating coil with a soft brush.
- Wipe the interior walls with a damp microfiber cloth.
Method 1: Lemon and Water Steam Clean (Best for Odor)
This is the most effective method for eliminating burnt smell from an air fryer:
Step 1: Cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice into the air fryer basket. Place the squeezed lemon halves in the basket as well.
Step 2: Add 1–2 tablespoons of water to the basket.
Step 3: Run the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3–5 minutes. The lemon steam fills the interior and neutralizes burnt odor compounds with citric acid.
Step 4: Allow to cool, then wipe the interior with a damp cloth. The lemon residue will have loosened any remaining grease and left a fresh scent.
Method 2: White Vinegar Steam
Pour 2–3 tablespoons of white vinegar into the basket. Run the air fryer at 350°F for 3 minutes. The vinegar steam neutralizes burnt odor compounds. Allow to cool and wipe clean. Note: the vinegar smell dissipates quickly once the air fryer cools.
Method 3: Baking Soda Overnight Absorption
Place an open bowl or small plate of baking soda inside the air fryer basket. Close the drawer and leave overnight. Baking soda absorbs odor molecules from the air inside the closed appliance. Remove in the morning and run the air fryer empty for 2–3 minutes to clear any baking soda dust before cooking.
Method 4: Activated Charcoal
For persistent burnt smells that don't respond to the above methods, place a small container of activated charcoal inside the closed air fryer for 24–48 hours. Activated charcoal is significantly more effective than baking soda for absorbing stubborn volatile compounds.
For New Air Fryers: The First-Use Burn-Off
New air fryers often smell burnt or plasticky during the first few uses as manufacturing oils, coatings, and plastic components cure at high heat. To speed up this process:
- Wash the basket and drawer with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly.
- Run the air fryer empty at its highest temperature for 10–15 minutes with good ventilation.
- Repeat once or twice if the smell persists.
- The smell should disappear after 2–3 uses.
Prevention: Keep Your Air Fryer Smell-Free
- Clean the basket and drawer after every use — grease left to bake on is the primary cause of burnt smells.
- Use parchment paper liners to prevent grease from reaching the drawer and heating coil.
- Add a tablespoon of water to the drawer when cooking fatty foods to prevent grease from burning.
- Clean the heating coil every 5–10 uses to prevent grease buildup from smoking.
Final Thoughts
Burnt smell in an air fryer is almost always a grease problem. Clean the source first, then use the lemon steam method for fast odor elimination. With regular cleaning and parchment liners, the burnt smell won't return.
