How to Prevent Air Fryer from Getting Dirty

Why Prevention Is Better Than Cleaning
Cleaning an air fryer after every use is necessary — but with the right habits and accessories, you can dramatically reduce how much cleaning is needed. The key is intercepting grease and food residue before it reaches the basket surface, drawer, and heating coil. A few simple strategies can cut your air fryer cleaning time by 80% or more.
Strategy 1: Use Parchment Paper Liners (Most Effective)
Air fryer parchment paper liners are the single most effective way to keep your air fryer clean. They sit in the basket and catch all drips, grease, and food residue during cooking. After cooking, simply lift out the liner and discard — the basket underneath stays almost completely clean.
Air fryer parchment paper liners come pre-cut to fit standard basket sizes and have perforations that allow hot air to circulate properly. Use them for everything except very light foods that might blow around — always add food on top of the liner before starting the air fryer.
Important: Never put a liner in the air fryer without food on top — the circulating air will blow it into the heating element and it can catch fire.
Strategy 2: Use a Silicone Liner (Reusable Option)
For a zero-waste alternative to disposable parchment liners, silicone air fryer liners are reusable, dishwasher-safe, and last indefinitely. They sit in the basket and catch grease just like parchment liners. After cooking, remove the silicone liner and wash it separately — the basket stays clean. Silicone liners are particularly good for foods that produce a lot of liquid grease.
Strategy 3: Add Water to the Drawer
For fatty foods like bacon, chicken wings, and sausages, add 1–2 tablespoons of water to the drawer (beneath the basket) before cooking. The water catches dripping grease before it hits the hot drawer surface and burns on. It also reduces smoke during cooking. Replace the water after each cook.
Strategy 4: Never Use Cooking Spray Directly in the Basket
Aerosol cooking sprays (like PAM) contain propellants and additives that build up a sticky, gummy residue on non-stick surfaces that is very difficult to remove and degrades the coating over time. Instead, use a silicone brush to apply a thin layer of oil directly to food or to the basket surface. This provides the same non-stick effect without the residue buildup.
Strategy 5: Pat Food Dry Before Air Frying
Excess moisture on food creates steam during cooking, which carries grease and food particles to the interior walls and heating coil. Pat food dry with paper towels before placing in the air fryer. This reduces splatter, improves crispiness, and keeps the interior cleaner.
Strategy 6: Don't Overfill the Basket
Overfilling the basket causes food to touch the sides and top of the air fryer interior, transferring grease and residue directly to the walls. It also reduces air circulation, leading to uneven cooking and more splatter. Cook in batches if needed — a single layer of food in the basket produces the best results and the least mess.
Strategy 7: Wipe Down After Every Use
The most important habit for keeping an air fryer clean is wiping it down after every single use — while it's still slightly warm (not hot). Fresh grease wipes away in seconds. Grease that has cooled and set requires soaking and scrubbing. A 30-second wipe with a damp microfiber cloth after every cook prevents 90% of the buildup that makes deep cleaning necessary.
Strategy 8: Line the Drawer with Foil (For Fatty Foods)
For particularly greasy cooks, line the drawer (not the basket) with a piece of aluminum foil before cooking. The foil catches dripping grease and can be discarded after cooking, leaving the drawer clean. Make sure the foil doesn't block the airflow vents in the drawer.
Maintenance Schedule to Keep Your Air Fryer Clean
- After every use: Wipe the basket and drawer with a damp cloth while still warm. Empty any grease from the drawer.
- Every 3–5 uses: Full soak and wash of basket and drawer.
- Every 10 uses: Wipe the interior walls and check the heating coil.
- Monthly: Deep clean the heating coil and interior.
Final Thoughts
Preventing your air fryer from getting dirty is mostly about two things: using liners and wiping down immediately after use. Parchment or silicone liners eliminate most of the basket cleaning, and a 30-second post-cook wipe prevents grease from ever baking on. Build these habits and your air fryer will stay clean with minimal effort.
