How to Keep Towels Fluffy

How to Keep Towels Fluffy

Why Do Towels Go Stiff?

Towels become stiff and scratchy for a few common reasons: too much detergent leaving residue in the fibers, fabric softener coating the loops and reducing absorbency, hard water mineral deposits, and over-drying on high heat. The good news is that all of these are fixable — and preventable.

Tip 1: Use Less Detergent

This is the most counterintuitive tip — but using too much detergent is the number one cause of stiff towels. Excess detergent doesn't fully rinse out and builds up in the fibers over time, making them stiff and less absorbent. Use half the recommended amount for towels — they don't need as much as clothing.

Tip 2: Ditch the Fabric Softener

Fabric softener feels like the obvious solution to stiff towels — but it actually makes the problem worse over time. It coats the cotton loops with a waxy film that reduces absorbency and traps odors. Stop using it entirely on towels.

Tip 3: Use White Vinegar Instead

Replace fabric softener with ½ cup of white vinegar added to the rinse cycle. Vinegar:

  • Dissolves detergent and mineral buildup in the fibers
  • Naturally softens the cotton loops without coating them
  • Eliminates musty odors
  • Doesn't leave any vinegar smell once dry

Use it every wash for consistently soft, fluffy towels.

Tip 4: Dry with Wool Dryer Balls

Replace dryer sheets (another culprit for coating fibers) with wool dryer balls. They physically agitate the towel loops as the dryer tumbles, keeping them open and fluffy. They also reduce drying time by improving airflow — which means less heat exposure and less stiffness from over-drying.

Tip 5: Don't Over-Dry

Over-drying on high heat is a major cause of stiff, rough towels. Dry on medium heat and remove while still very slightly damp — the residual heat will finish the job. Shake towels vigorously before folding to open up the loops.

Tip 6: Hang Properly Between Uses

A towel that doesn't dry fully between uses develops mildew and a musty smell that gets worse with each wash. Use a proper towel bar or hooks that allow the full towel to hang open with airflow on both sides. Never leave towels folded or in a pile when damp.

How to Restore Already-Stiff Towels

If your towels are already stiff, do a reset wash:

  1. Wash on hot with 1 cup of white vinegar, no detergent
  2. Run a second hot wash with ½ cup baking soda, no detergent
  3. Dry on medium heat with wool dryer balls
  4. Shake vigorously before folding

Most towels recover significant softness after this treatment.
