How to Keep Kitchen Hygienic with Pets

Pets are beloved family members, but they also introduce bacteria, hair, and contamination risks into the kitchen. Dogs and cats carry bacteria including Salmonella, Campylobacter, and E. coli — often without showing any signs of illness. With the right habits, you can maintain a hygienic kitchen without compromising your relationship with your pets.

The Main Hygiene Risks Pets Pose in the Kitchen

  • Bacteria on paws tracked from litter boxes, outdoor soil, and other surfaces onto kitchen floors and counters
  • Pet hair contaminating food preparation surfaces
  • Pet food and water bowls harboring bacteria
  • Pets licking food preparation surfaces or food
  • Zoonotic bacteria in pet feces (especially relevant for cats using litter boxes)

Rule 1: Keep Pets Off Counters and Food Prep Surfaces

This is the most important rule. Pet paws carry bacteria from litter boxes, outdoor soil, and other surfaces. Establish and consistently enforce a no-pets-on-counters rule. If your cat jumps on counters, sanitize the surface with Clorox Disinfecting Mist before food preparation.

Rule 2: Wash Hands After Touching Pets

Wash hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds after:

  • Petting or handling your pet
  • Cleaning the litter box
  • Handling pet food (especially raw pet food)
  • Cleaning up pet waste

This is especially important before handling food or touching food preparation surfaces.

Rule 3: Clean Pet Food Bowls Daily

Pet food bowls are consistently ranked among the most bacteria-contaminated items in the home. Wash pet food and water bowls daily with hot soapy water, or run them through the dishwasher. Store pet food in airtight containers to prevent contamination and pest attraction.

Rule 4: Keep Pet Food Away from Human Food Prep Areas

Feed pets in a designated area away from the main food preparation zone. Don't prepare pet food on the same surface as human food without sanitizing between uses.

Rule 5: Be Extra Careful with Raw Pet Food

Raw pet food diets carry significant Salmonella and E. coli risks. If you feed raw pet food:

  • Use dedicated bowls and utensils for raw pet food only
  • Sanitize all surfaces that contact raw pet food with disinfectant spray
  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling
  • Store raw pet food separately from human food in the refrigerator

Rule 6: Sweep and Mop the Kitchen Floor Regularly

Pet paws track bacteria onto the kitchen floor, which can then be transferred to other surfaces. Sweep daily and mop with a disinfectant solution at least twice a week if you have pets.

Rule 7: Use a Sealed Trash Can

Pets are attracted to kitchen trash. Use a step-pedal trash can with a sealed lid to prevent pets from accessing garbage, which can cause illness and spread contamination.

Rule 8: Store Food Securely

Store all food in airtight containers that pets cannot access. Don't leave food unattended on counters — even briefly.
