Why Hand Washing Is Best for Silk
Hand washing is the safest and most recommended method for cleaning silk garments. Unlike machine washing, hand washing gives you complete control over water temperature, agitation level, and handling — all critical factors for protecting silk's delicate protein fibers and preserving its natural luster and drape.
What You Need
- A clean basin or sink
- Cool water (60–68°F / 15–20°C)
- A dedicated silk or delicate fabric detergent
- 2 clean white towels
- A padded hanger or flat drying surface
Step-by-Step: How to Hand Wash Silk
Step 1: Prepare the Wash Basin
Fill a clean basin or sink with cool water. Silk is extremely sensitive to heat; even lukewarm water can cause shrinkage and dull the fabric's sheen over time.
Step 2: Add Detergent
Add a small amount of pH-neutral detergent — about half a teaspoon to one teaspoon. The Laundress Delicate Wash is formulated specifically for silk and lingerie — double concentrated, so a tiny amount is all you need. It cleans gently without stripping silk's natural proteins or leaving residue that dulls the sheen. Avoid regular laundry detergent (too alkaline) and detergents with enzymes.
Step 3: Test for Color Bleeding
Before submerging the entire garment, test a hidden area. Wet a small spot and press a white cloth against it. If color transfers, wash the item separately.
Step 4: Submerge and Gently Wash
Submerge the silk item fully in the water. Use gentle, swishing motions — move the fabric through the water rather than scrubbing or rubbing. Soak time: 3–5 minutes maximum.
Step 5: Rinse Completely
Drain the soapy water. Refill with clean cool water and gently press the water through the fabric. Repeat 2–3 times until the water runs completely clear.
Step 6: Remove Excess Water Without Wringing
Lay the silk flat on a clean white towel, fold the towel over the silk, and gently press down. Never wring or twist silk.
Step 7: Dry Properly
- For scarves and lingerie: lay flat on a clean dry towel and reshape
- For blouses and dresses: hang on a padded hanger to maintain shape
- Dry in shade, away from direct sunlight
- Never use a dryer — heat destroys silk
Final Thoughts
Hand washing silk is a simple skill that protects your investment. The key principles are: cool water, a dedicated silk detergent, gentle handling, no wringing, and air drying on a padded hanger away from heat and sunlight.
