How to Groom a Shih Tzu at Home
Share
Shih Tzus have a beautiful, flowing double coat that requires daily attention to stay healthy and tangle-free. Whether you keep your Shih Tzu in a long show coat or a practical puppy cut, here's how to groom them at home.
Understanding the Shih Tzu Coat
Shih Tzus have a long, dense double coat that grows continuously. Unlike shedding breeds, their dead hair stays in the coat and causes mats if not brushed out daily. The facial hair grows over the eyes and must be kept trimmed or tied back. They're considered low-shedding but high-maintenance.
Essential Tools for Shih Tzus
- Slicker brush: Swihauk Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush — daily brushing essential
- Detangling spray: We Love Doodles Detangler Spray — use before every brushing session
- Dematting comb: Poodle Dematting Fur Rake Comb — for working through tangles
- Clippers: oneisall Low-Noise Cordless Clipper Kit — for puppy cut maintenance
- Grooming scissors: GLADOG 5-in-1 Scissors Set — essential for face, topknot, and paw trimming
- Dog dryer: Jellyfish Handheld Dog Dryer
Step-by-Step: Grooming a Shih Tzu at Home
- Daily brushing is mandatory. Spray lightly with detangler and brush through the entire coat section by section. Pay special attention to behind the ears, armpits, and the beard area where mats form fastest.
- Work through tangles with the dematting comb. For any knots, use the rake to gently work through them before they become full mats.
- Bathe every 2–3 weeks. Shih Tzus need more frequent bathing than most breeds due to their facial folds and long coat. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.
- Blow dry straight. Use the Jellyfish dryer while brushing to straighten the coat completely before trimming.
- Trim the face. Use the GLADOG curved scissors to trim the hair around the eyes so your Shih Tzu can see clearly. Trim the beard to a neat shape.
- Trim the body (puppy cut). Use the oneisall clippers with a guard comb for an even length all over. The puppy cut is the most practical and popular home cut for Shih Tzus.
- Trim the paws. Use scissors to trim fur flush with the pads and neaten around the feet.
- Tie the topknot if keeping a longer coat — this keeps hair out of the eyes between trims.
Eye and Face Care
Shih Tzus are prone to eye discharge and tear staining. Clean the eye area daily with a gentle eye wipe and keep the facial hair trimmed away from the eyes to prevent irritation.
How Often to Groom a Shih Tzu
- Brushing: Daily
- Bath: Every 2–3 weeks
- Full clip: Every 6–8 weeks
- Face trim: Every 2–4 weeks as needed
Final Thoughts
Shih Tzu grooming requires daily commitment but is very achievable at home. The puppy cut dramatically reduces maintenance compared to the full show coat — and most pet Shih Tzus look adorable in it.
