How to Get Rid of Ants on Kitchen Counter

Ants on the kitchen counter are one of the most common household pest complaints. They're attracted by food residue, crumbs, and spills — and once a scout finds a food source, it lays a pheromone trail that brings hundreds more. Here's how to stop them.

Step 1: Clean the Counter Thoroughly

Before any treatment, remove what's attracting the ants. Wipe down the entire counter with a damp cloth, paying attention to:

Under and around appliances (toaster, coffee maker, blender)
Around the edges and backsplash
Under fruit bowls and cutting boards
Any sticky residue from spills or drips

Step 2: Disrupt the Scent Trail

Step 3: Place Bait Near the Trail

Don't leave dirty dishes on the counter overnight
Store fruit in the fridge during warm months
Keep a peppermint spray on hand for quick deterrent application
Check bait stations monthly and replace when empty

How Long Until Ants Are Gone?

Surface cleaning and trail disruption work immediately. Bait stations take 3–7 days to reach the colony. Once the colony is eliminated and entry points are sealed, counter ants should not return.
