How to Get Rid of Ants in Kitchen Cabinets

Finding ants inside your kitchen cabinets is particularly alarming because they're in direct contact with your food. The good news is that with the right approach, you can eliminate them completely and keep them out for good.

Why Ants Get Into Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets offer ants exactly what they're looking for: food, shelter, and warmth. Common attractants include crumbs in corners, spilled sugar or flour, sticky jar lids, and improperly sealed food packaging. Cabinets also provide dark, undisturbed spaces where ants can establish satellite colonies close to food sources.

Step 1: Empty and Deep Clean the Cabinets

Remove everything from the affected cabinets. Wipe down all surfaces with hot soapy water, paying close attention to:

• Corners and edges where crumbs accumulate
• Under shelf liners
• Around hinges and door frames
• The back wall where pipes may enter

After cleaning, spray surfaces with Orange Guard Home Pest Control Spray — it's food-grade and safe to use inside cabinets where food is stored.

Step 2: Inspect and Transfer Food

Check every item you removed for signs of ant activity. Discard anything that's been compromised. Transfer all dry goods — flour, sugar, cereal, pasta, rice, snacks — into airtight food storage containers. This eliminates the food signal that drew ants to the cabinet in the first place and prevents future infestations.

Step 3: Place Bait Stations Inside the Cabinet

Place TERRO Ant & Roach Bait Stations in the back corners of affected cabinets. The slow-acting borax bait lets worker ants carry it back to the colony, killing the nest from within. Leave bait undisturbed for at least 3–7 days — resist the urge to spray, which would kill workers before they can deliver the bait.

Step 4: Seal Entry Points Inside the Cabinet

Look for gaps where pipes or wires enter the cabinet from the wall — these are the most common ant entry points. Seal them with clear silicone caulk. Also check the back corners and any gaps between the cabinet and the wall.

Step 5: Apply a Deterrent Along Cabinet Edges

Once the infestation is under control, apply a line of deterrent along the inside edges of cabinet doors and along the baseboard below. A few drops of peppermint essential oil on a cotton ball placed in cabinet corners acts as an ongoing repellent. Replace every 2–3 weeks.

Ongoing Prevention

• Store all dry goods in airtight containers permanently
• Wipe jar lids before returning them to the cabinet
• Check shelf liners regularly and replace when worn
• Keep bait stations active in cabinets as a preventive measure
• Inspect the back of cabinets seasonally for new gaps or cracks

How Long Until the Ants Are Gone?

With bait stations active and food sources removed, you should see a significant reduction within 3–5 days and full elimination within 1–2 weeks as the bait reaches the colony.
