How to Find Cockroach Nest in Kitchen

Cockroaches don't build structured nests like ants or wasps. Instead, they gather in "harborages" — dark, warm, tight spaces close to food and water where they rest, breed, and molt. Finding these harborages is essential to effective treatment.

What Is a Cockroach Harborage?

A harborage is any dark, confined space where cockroaches feel secure. They prefer areas where their body touches surfaces on multiple sides (thigmotaxis). Common characteristics:

• Dark and undisturbed
• Warm — ideally 70–85°F
• Close to moisture
• Near a food source
• Tight enough that their body contacts multiple surfaces

How to Find Harborages: The Flashlight Method

At night, 1–2 hours after lights out, use a flashlight to inspect the kitchen. Cockroaches will be active and visible. Check:

• Under and behind the refrigerator (motor area is warm)
• Under and behind the stove
• Inside the motor housing of the dishwasher
• Under the sink, especially near pipes
• Inside lower cabinet corners and along the back wall
• Behind the kick plate at the base of cabinets
• Inside wall voids accessible through gaps around pipes
• Inside electrical outlets and switch plates on kitchen walls

Signs That Identify a Harborage

• Droppings: Dark specks resembling coffee grounds or black pepper concentrated in one area
• Egg cases (oothecae): Brown, capsule-shaped, 8–10mm long — found glued to surfaces near harborages
• Smear marks: Dark, irregular marks along walls and surfaces from cockroach bodies
• Musty odor: A distinctive oily, musty smell concentrated in the harborage area
• Shed skins: Translucent cockroach exoskeletons left behind after molting

Use Sticky Traps to Pinpoint Location

Place Tomcat Glue Boards in multiple locations throughout the kitchen. Check after 24–48 hours — the trap with the most roaches is closest to the harborage. Move traps progressively closer to the highest-activity area to narrow down the exact location.

Treating the Harborage

Once located:

• Accessible harborage: Apply Ecoxall Boric Acid directly into the space. A thin dusting is sufficient — cockroaches walking through it carry it back and share it with others.
• Inside wall voids: Place Combat Max Bait Stations as close to the entry point as possible. Workers will carry bait into the void.
• Under appliances: Slide bait stations and glue boards as far back as possible under the refrigerator and stove.

Seal After Elimination

Once the harborage population is eliminated, seal all gaps around pipes, baseboards, and wall penetrations with clear silicone caulk to prevent new cockroaches from establishing in the same locations.
