How to Dry Cashmere Without Damage
Share
Drying cashmere incorrectly is one of the most common ways to damage it permanently. Cashmere must never be hung or put in the dryer — here's exactly how to dry cashmere without damage.
The Two Rules That Matter Most
- Never hang wet cashmere — the weight of water stretches the delicate fibers out of shape permanently.
- Never put cashmere in the dryer — heat causes irreversible shrinkage and felting.
Both mistakes are permanent. Flat drying is the only safe method.
What You Need
- Clean dry towels
- A flat sweater drying rack — the mesh surface allows air to circulate underneath for even, faster drying
- A well-ventilated space away from direct heat and sunlight
How to Dry Cashmere: Step by Step
- Remove excess water gently. After washing, lift the cashmere with both hands supporting the full weight. Gently press — never wring or twist. Place on a clean dry towel, roll up, and press firmly. This removes significant water and speeds up drying.
- Prepare your drying rack. Set up the OXO Folding Sweater Dryer on a flat surface in a well-ventilated area. The mesh allows air to circulate from below.
- Lay flat immediately. Place the cashmere on the rack in its natural position.
- Reshape right away. While still damp and pliable, gently reshape to original dimensions. Smooth the body, align seams, adjust collar and sleeves. This is the most important step — cashmere holds its shape once dry.
- Flip halfway through. After several hours, flip the garment to ensure even drying on both sides.
- Dry completely before storing or wearing — 12–24 hours depending on thickness and air circulation.
Where to Dry Cashmere
- Best: Well-ventilated room at room temperature, away from direct sunlight
- Good: Near an open window with gentle air movement
- Avoid: Radiators and heaters (cause shrinkage), direct sunlight (fades color and weakens fibers), damp rooms (cause mildew)
How Long Does Cashmere Take to Dry?
- Lightweight cashmere: 8–12 hours
- Medium-weight sweater: 12–24 hours
- Heavy or thick cashmere: 24–36 hours
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I speed up drying cashmere?
Yes — press out as much water as possible with a towel before laying flat. Place in a well-ventilated area. A fan nearby (not blowing directly on the garment) helps. Never use a dryer or direct heat source.
What if I don't have a sweater drying rack?
Lay flat on a clean dry towel on a flat surface. Replace the towel when saturated. This works but dries more slowly since air can't circulate underneath.
My cashmere dried out of shape — can I fix it?
Lightly dampen with a spray bottle of cool water, reshape gently, and lay flat to dry again. For significant distortion, hand wash again and reshape carefully while wet.
Can I dry cashmere outside?
In shade only — never in direct sunlight. Direct sun fades color and weakens cashmere fibers over time. A shaded outdoor spot with good air circulation is fine.
How do I know when cashmere is fully dry?
Feel the thickest parts — seams, ribbing, and any doubled layers. If anything feels cool or slightly damp, it needs more time. Storing damp cashmere causes mildew and permanent odor.
