How to Clean Washing Machine Detergent Drawer

Why the Detergent Drawer Gets So Dirty

The detergent drawer — also called the soap dispenser or detergent tray — is constantly exposed to moisture, detergent residue, and fabric softener. Over time, this creates a thick, slimy buildup that harbors mold and bacteria. A dirty drawer can block detergent from dispensing properly, leaving residue on clothes and reducing wash performance. Cleaning it monthly takes less than 10 minutes and makes a noticeable difference.

Step 1: Remove the Drawer

Most washing machine detergent drawers are fully removable:

  • Pull the drawer out as far as it goes
  • Press the release tab (usually a small button or lever inside the drawer) and pull it out completely
  • If your drawer doesn't come out, check your machine's manual — some models have a fixed drawer that must be cleaned in place

Step 2: Disassemble and Soak

  • Remove any removable inserts (fabric softener compartment, powder insert) from the drawer
  • Fill a basin with hot water and a small amount of mild dish soap
  • Submerge the drawer and inserts and soak for 10–15 minutes to loosen buildup

Step 3: Scrub Thoroughly

  • Use an old toothbrush to scrub all compartments, corners, and crevices
  • Pay special attention to the fabric softener compartment — softener residue is thick and sticky
  • For stubborn mold or black spots, apply a small amount of OLELON Mold Stain Remover Gel to the affected areas, let sit 5 minutes, then scrub
  • Rinse thoroughly under warm running water until all soap and residue is gone

Step 4: Clean the Drawer Housing

While the drawer is soaking, clean the housing (the slot the drawer sits in):

  • Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe the interior of the housing
  • Use an old toothbrush to reach into corners and around the water inlet holes
  • Wipe with a cloth dampened with white vinegar to dissolve mineral deposits and kill bacteria
  • Rinse with a clean damp cloth

Step 5: Dry and Reassemble

  • Dry the drawer and inserts with a clean cloth before reinserting
  • Slide the drawer back in firmly until it clicks into place
  • Run a short rinse cycle to flush any remaining residue from the housing

How Often Should You Clean the Detergent Drawer?

  • Full clean: once a month
  • Quick wipe: after every few washes to prevent buildup
  • Immediately: if you notice detergent not dispensing properly or visible mold

Quick Tips to Keep the Drawer Clean Longer

  • Use liquid detergent instead of powder — powder is more likely to clump and build up
  • Don't overfill compartments — excess detergent overflows and builds up in the housing
  • Leave the drawer slightly open after each wash to allow it to dry
  • Switch to laundry detergent pods placed directly in the drum — they bypass the drawer entirely and eliminate drawer buildup
