How to Clean Waffle Maker Plates

Why Waffle Maker Plates Are Tricky to Clean
Waffle maker plates have deep grid patterns that trap batter, oil, and crumbs in every groove. The non-stick coating on the plates makes waffles release easily — but that same coating is vulnerable to abrasive scrubbers and harsh cleaning methods. Most waffle makers are also not submersible, meaning you can't rinse the plates under running water without risking damage to the electrical components. Cleaning requires technique rather than force.
Removable vs. Fixed Plates
- Removable plates: Some waffle makers have plates that detach for washing. These are much easier to clean — wash in warm soapy water or place in the dishwasher (check your manual).
- Fixed plates: Most waffle makers have plates that are permanently attached. These require cleaning in place without getting water into the electrical components.
What You'll Need
- Paper towels
- Soft silicone brush or pastry brush
- Damp microfiber cloth
- Toothpick or wooden skewer
- Dish soap (for removable plates only)
A soft silicone brush or pastry brush is the ideal tool for cleaning waffle maker grids — the bristles reach into the grooves without scratching the non-stick surface. Use microfiber cloths for wiping — they clean without leaving lint in the grid grooves. A toothpick or wooden skewer dislodges batter from the deepest grid corners.
Method 1: While Still Warm (Easiest)
The easiest time to clean waffle maker plates is while they're still warm — not hot — immediately after cooking:
Step 1: Unplug the waffle maker and allow to cool for 5–10 minutes until warm but not hot.
Step 2: Open the waffle maker and use a folded paper towel to wipe the plates while they're still warm. The residual heat keeps the batter soft and it wipes away easily. Work the paper towel into the grid grooves.
Step 3: Use a toothpick or wooden skewer to dislodge any batter stuck in the grid corners.
Step 4: Wipe with a barely damp microfiber cloth to remove any remaining residue. Wring the cloth out thoroughly — it should be barely moist, not wet.
Step 5: Wipe with a dry cloth and leave open to air dry completely before closing and storing.
Method 2: Damp Cloth Clean (For Cooled Plates)
If the waffle maker has cooled completely:
Step 1: Unplug and open the waffle maker.
Step 2: Use a toothpick to loosen any hardened batter from the grid grooves.
Step 3: Dampen a microfiber cloth with warm water and a tiny drop of dish soap. Wring out thoroughly — the cloth should be barely damp. Wipe the plates, working the cloth into the grid pattern.
Step 4: Wipe again with a clean damp cloth (water only) to remove any soap residue.
Step 5: Dry with a clean cloth and leave open to air dry.
Method 3: Removable Plates
If your waffle maker has removable plates:
- Remove the plates according to your manual.
- Wash in warm soapy water with a soft sponge or silicone brush.
- Use a toothbrush to scrub the grid grooves.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before reattaching.
- Check your manual for dishwasher compatibility — some removable plates are dishwasher-safe (top rack).
Removing Stubborn Baked-On Batter
For batter that has hardened in the grid grooves:
- Place a damp paper towel on the closed waffle maker plates and plug in briefly to generate steam. The steam softens the hardened batter. Unplug, open, and wipe away.
- Apply a small amount of cooking oil to the hardened batter and let sit for 5 minutes — the oil helps loosen it from the non-stick surface. Wipe away with a paper towel.
- Use a wooden toothpick or skewer to carefully chip away hardened batter from the grid corners — never use metal tools.
What NOT to Do with Waffle Maker Plates
- Never submerge a waffle maker with fixed plates in water.
- Never use abrasive scrubbers or steel wool on the non-stick plates.
- Never use metal utensils to scrape the plates.
- Never spray water or cleaning solution directly onto the plates — liquid can seep into the electrical components.
How Often Should You Clean Waffle Maker Plates?
- After every use — batter hardens quickly and becomes much harder to remove.
- Deep clean monthly, including the exterior and hinge area.
Final Thoughts
Waffle maker cleaning is easiest when done while the plates are still warm. A paper towel wipe immediately after cooking removes most residue in under a minute. For fixed plates, always use a barely damp cloth and never submerge the appliance. Protect the non-stick coating and your waffle maker will produce perfect waffles for years.
