How to Clean Range Hood with Degreaser
Share
When You Need a Real Degreaser
Dish soap and baking soda handle light range hood grease well — but when grease has been building up for months, has baked on from heat, or has turned dark brown and sticky, you need a purpose-built degreaser. Commercial degreasers contain surfactants and solvents that chemically break down polymerized grease — the kind that no amount of scrubbing with gentle cleaners will shift.
What You'll Need
- Krud Kutter Original Cleaner Degreaser — ready-to-use, safe for most surfaces, ideal for exterior and light-to-moderate interior grease
- Zep Heavy-Duty Citrus Degreaser Concentrate — restaurant-grade, for heavy and baked-on grease on filters and interior
- Rubber cleaning gloves — essential when using commercial degreasers
- Microfiber cleaning cloths
- Stiff brush and old toothbrush
- Large basin for filter soaking
- Plastic scraper
- Newspaper or drop cloth for stovetop protection
- Warm water for rinsing
Choosing the Right Degreaser
- Krud Kutter (ready-to-use): Best for exterior surfaces, weekly maintenance, and light interior grease. Safe for stainless steel, painted surfaces, and most finishes.
- Zep Citrus Degreaser (concentrate): Best for filters, fan blades, interior walls, and heavy baked-on grease. Dilute to appropriate strength for the task.
Step 1: Prepare
- Turn off and unplug the range hood.
- Lay newspaper over the stovetop to catch drips.
- Put on rubber gloves — degreasers can irritate skin.
- Remove all filters.
Step 2: Degrease the Filters
- Fill a basin with hot water.
- Add Zep Citrus Degreaser at 1:4 ratio for heavy grease, 1:8 for moderate.
- Submerge filters and soak for 20–30 minutes.
- Scrub with a stiff brush.
- Rinse thoroughly under hot water.
- Dry completely.
Step 3: Degrease the Interior
- Dilute Zep Citrus Degreaser 1:3 with warm water.
- Apply to a microfiber cloth and wipe all interior surfaces.
- For baked-on grease: apply degreaser, let sit 5–10 minutes, scrape with plastic scraper, wipe clean.
- Use a toothbrush for corners and seams.
- Wipe with a clean damp cloth to rinse all degreaser residue.
Step 4: Degrease the Exterior
- Spray Krud Kutter onto a microfiber cloth.
- Wipe the exterior with the grain (stainless steel) or in smooth strokes (painted).
- Let sit 2–3 minutes on greasy areas.
- Wipe clean with a fresh damp cloth.
- Dry immediately.
Step 5: Rinse Thoroughly
This step is critical — degreaser residue left on surfaces attracts dust and can damage finishes over time:
- Wipe all cleaned surfaces with a clean cloth dampened with plain water.
- Repeat until no degreaser residue remains.
- Dry all surfaces completely.
Step 6: Polish and Reassemble
- Apply Weiman Stainless Steel Polish to stainless surfaces.
- Reinstall clean, dry filters.
- Restore power and test.
Safety Notes
- Always work in a well-ventilated area when using commercial degreasers.
- Never mix degreasers with bleach — creates toxic fumes.
- Rinse all surfaces thoroughly — degreaser residue is slippery and can damage finishes.
- Keep degreasers away from eyes and skin — wear gloves throughout.
Final Thoughts
Commercial degreasers are the most effective tools for range hood cleaning — Krud Kutter for accessible exterior surfaces, Zep Citrus for the heavy-duty filter and interior work. Used correctly with proper dilution, contact time, and thorough rinsing, they restore even the most neglected range hoods to full cleanliness and performance.
