How to Clean Range Hood Fan Blades
Share
Why Range Hood Fan Blades Need Cleaning
The fan blades inside your range hood are the engine of the entire ventilation system — they pull air, grease, and smoke up through the filters and out through the duct. Over time, grease bypasses or passes through the filters and coats the fan blades. This grease buildup reduces fan efficiency, increases motor strain, creates noise, and — critically — is a fire hazard. Cleaning the fan blades is one of the most important (and most neglected) range hood maintenance tasks.
Safety First
Always turn off the range hood at the switch AND unplug it or switch off the circuit breaker before accessing the fan. Never clean fan blades while the unit is powered.
What You'll Need
- Zep Heavy-Duty Citrus Degreaser Concentrate — the most effective product for baked-on fan blade grease
- Krud Kutter Original Cleaner Degreaser — for lighter buildup
- Rubber cleaning gloves
- Microfiber cleaning cloths
- Old toothbrush — for blade edges and hub
- Plastic scraper — for hardened grease
- Large basin or bag for soaking (if blades are removable)
- Warm water
Step 1: Access the Fan Blades
- Turn off and unplug the range hood.
- Remove the grease filters to access the fan compartment.
- Shine a flashlight into the fan area to assess the grease buildup.
- Check if the fan blades are removable — some models allow the fan assembly to be unscrewed and removed for easier cleaning. Consult your manual.
Step 2: Clean In Place (If Blades Are Not Removable)
- Spray Krud Kutter onto a microfiber cloth (not directly into the fan compartment).
- Wipe each blade carefully, working from the hub outward.
- For heavy grease: apply diluted Zep Citrus Degreaser (1:4) to a cloth and wipe each blade.
- Let sit for 3–5 minutes on heavily greased blades.
- Use an old toothbrush to scrub the blade edges and the hub area.
- Wipe clean with a fresh damp cloth.
- Dry thoroughly before restoring power.
Step 3: Deep Clean Removable Fan Blades
If your fan assembly is removable:
- Unscrew and carefully remove the fan assembly.
- Place in a basin with hot water and diluted Zep Citrus Degreaser (1:4).
- Soak for 20–30 minutes.
- Scrub all blade surfaces and the hub with a stiff brush.
- Rinse thoroughly under hot running water.
- Dry completely — allow to air dry for at least 1 hour before reinstalling.
- Reinstall and restore power.
Removing Hardened Grease
For grease that has hardened into a solid coating:
- Apply Zep Citrus Degreaser at full concentration to the hardened areas.
- Let sit for 10–15 minutes.
- Gently scrape with a plastic scraper.
- Follow with a cloth wipe and rinse.
How Often to Clean Fan Blades
- Light cooking: Every 6 months
- Regular cooking: Every 3 months
- Heavy frying: Monthly
Final Thoughts
Range hood fan blade cleaning is a safety task as much as a maintenance task — grease-coated blades are a fire hazard and a significant efficiency drain. Zep Citrus Degreaser handles even the most severe buildup; Krud Kutter handles regular maintenance. Always power off completely before accessing the fan, and dry thoroughly before restoring power.
