How to Clean Range Hood Exterior
Share
Why the Range Hood Exterior Gets So Greasy
The exterior of your range hood sits directly above the stove — the highest-grease zone in the kitchen. Airborne cooking grease, steam, and smoke constantly settle on the hood's surface, creating a sticky film that attracts dust and darkens over time. Left uncleaned, this buildup becomes increasingly difficult to remove and can permanently stain certain finishes.
Know Your Range Hood Finish
- Stainless steel: Most common. Handles most degreasers well. Always wipe with the grain.
- Painted / powder-coated: More delicate. Use gentle degreasers, avoid abrasives.
- Black stainless: Requires gentle cleaners — harsh chemicals strip the coating.
- Copper / brass: Use only mild dish soap — acids and degreasers damage the finish.

Cleaning the Underside of the Hood
The underside faces the stove directly and accumulates the most grease:

- For baked-on grease: apply Zep Citrus Degreaser, let sit 5 minutes, wipe clean.
- Rinse and dry.
How Often to Clean the Range Hood Exterior

Final Thoughts

Weekly wiping with Krud Kutter prevents buildup; monthly Zep Citrus treatment handles heavy grease; Weiman Stainless Steel Polish restores shine and protects. Always wipe stainless steel with the grain for a streak-free, scratch-free result.
