How to Clean a Knife Block (Remove Crumbs, Bacteria, and Mold)

Knife blocks are one of the most overlooked items in kitchen cleaning. The dark, enclosed slots trap crumbs, moisture, and bacteria — and can even develop mold if not cleaned regularly. Here's how to clean yours properly.

What You'll Need

How Often Should You Clean a Knife Block?

Clean the exterior monthly and do a full deep clean (including the slots) every 3–6 months, or immediately if you notice crumbs falling out or any musty smell.

Step-by-Step: How to Clean a Knife Block

Step 1: Remove All Knives

Take all knives out of the block and set aside. Wash and dry the knives separately.

Step 2: Shake Out Loose Debris

Turn the knife block upside down over a trash can and shake firmly. You may be surprised how many crumbs fall out.

Step 3: Brush Out the Slots

Use a long narrow bottle brush to scrub inside each slot. Insert the brush, rotate it, and pull out — this dislodges crumbs and debris stuck to the walls of the slot. Shake out again after brushing.

Step 4: Sanitize the Slots

Dampen a thin bottle brush with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water. Insert into each slot and scrub. Vinegar kills bacteria and mold without leaving harmful residue.

Step 5: Clean the Exterior

Wipe down the outside of the knife block with a microfiber cloth dampened with warm soapy water. For wooden blocks, dry immediately — don't let water sit on the wood.

Step 6: Dry Completely Before Replacing Knives

This is critical. Turn the block upside down and let air dry for at least 24 hours. Use a hair dryer on a low setting to speed up drying inside the slots. Never put knives back into a damp block — moisture causes rust on blades and mold inside the block.

Signs Your Knife Block Needs Immediate Cleaning

  • Musty or moldy smell coming from the slots
  • Visible crumbs or debris falling out
  • Rust spots appearing on knife blades (moisture in the block)
  • Dark staining visible inside the slots

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wash a knife block in the dishwasher?

No — wooden knife blocks will warp, crack, and split in the dishwasher. Hand clean only.

How do I get mold out of a knife block?

Scrub the slots with a bottle brush dipped in undiluted white vinegar. Let the vinegar sit in the slots for 10 minutes, then brush again and dry completely. For severe mold, consider replacing the block.

Is a magnetic knife strip more hygienic than a knife block?

Yes — magnetic strips are open-air and much easier to clean. They don't trap crumbs or moisture. If hygiene is a priority, a magnetic strip is the better storage option.
