How to Clean Kitchen After Cockroach Infestation

Eliminating cockroaches is only half the job. Cockroach droppings, shed skins, egg cases, and secretions contain bacteria (including Salmonella and E. coli), allergens, and pheromones that attract new cockroaches. A thorough post-infestation clean is essential for both hygiene and prevention.

Safety First

Before cleaning, wear gloves and a mask. Cockroach droppings and shed skins can trigger allergic reactions and asthma, especially when disturbed. Ventilate the kitchen well during cleaning.

Step 1: Remove Everything from Cabinets

Empty all cabinets completely. Inspect every item — discard any food that may have been contaminated. Transfer all remaining dry goods to airtight food storage containers before returning them to cleaned cabinets.

Step 2: Vacuum All Surfaces

Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to remove droppings, shed skins, egg cases, and debris from:

• All cabinet shelves, corners, and edges
• Under shelf liners
• Behind and under the refrigerator and stove
• Along baseboards
• Inside cabinet hinges and door frames

Dispose of the vacuum bag immediately in a sealed bag outside. If using a bagless vacuum, empty and clean the canister outside.

Step 3: Scrub All Surfaces with Hot Soapy Water

Wash all cabinet interiors, shelves, and drawer interiors with hot water and dish soap. Scrub thoroughly — cockroach secretions leave a residue that's not always visible but contains pheromones that attract new cockroaches.

Step 4: Disinfect Everything

After scrubbing, disinfect all surfaces with Clorox Disinfecting Mist. Spray all cabinet interiors, countertops, the inside of the refrigerator, and any surfaces where cockroach activity was observed. Let the disinfectant sit for the recommended contact time before wiping.

Pay special attention to:

• Under the sink and around pipes
• The area behind and under the refrigerator
• Inside the stove drawer and around the burners
• All cabinet hinges and corners

Step 5: Clean Appliances Thoroughly

• Refrigerator: Pull out and clean underneath and behind. Clean the drip tray. Wipe all interior surfaces.
• Stove: Remove burner grates and clean underneath. Clean the oven interior. Wipe down all exterior surfaces.
• Dishwasher: Clean the filter and door seal where cockroaches commonly hide.
• Microwave: Clean interior and exterior thoroughly.

Step 6: Wash All Dishes and Utensils

Run all dishes, glasses, and utensils through the dishwasher on a hot cycle, or wash by hand with hot soapy water. Cockroach droppings and secretions on dishes are a health hazard.

Step 7: Mop the Floor

Mop the entire kitchen floor with a disinfectant solution, paying attention to baseboards and the area under appliances.

Step 8: Apply Preventive Treatment

After cleaning, apply a thin dusting of boric acid along baseboards and inside cabinet hinges, and place fresh bait stations in key locations. Seal all gaps with silicone caulk.

Ongoing Monitoring

Place sticky traps in key locations for 4–6 weeks after cleaning to confirm the infestation has been fully eliminated. Zero catches over 2–3 weeks indicates successful elimination.
