How to Clean Glass Food Storage Containers
Share
Why Glass Containers Are Easier to Clean Than Plastic
Glass is non-porous, so it doesn't absorb food odors, stains, or bacteria the way plastic does. This makes glass food storage containers significantly easier to clean and more hygienic over time. The main cleaning challenges are the lid seals and mineral deposits from hard water.
What You'll Need
- Dawn Platinum Dish Soap
- Dish brush set
- Cup lid gap cleaning brush set
- White vinegar
- Microfiber cleaning cloths
Daily Cleaning
- Wash with warm soapy water and a dish brush
- Clean the lid separately — use a lid gap brush to scrub the seal groove and any crevices
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water
- Dry with a microfiber cloth or air dry with the lid off
Most glass food storage containers are dishwasher safe — check the manufacturer's label. The glass body handles the dishwasher well; the plastic or silicone lid should be checked separately.
Removing Mineral Deposits and Cloudiness
Hard water leaves a white film on glass containers over time. Fill with equal parts white vinegar and warm water, soak 15–30 minutes, then scrub and rinse. Dry immediately with a microfiber cloth to prevent new spots.
Removing Stubborn Food Residue
For baked-on or dried food residue, fill the container with hot soapy water and let soak 15–20 minutes before scrubbing. The residue will soften and lift easily. Never use metal scrapers on glass — use a plastic scraper or dish brush.
Cleaning the Lid Seal
The silicone or rubber seal in the lid is the most important part to clean. Remove it if possible and wash separately. Use a lid gap brush to scrub the groove where the seal sits — mold and food residue accumulate here. Check for mold regularly and replace the seal if it develops persistent mold.
Final Thoughts
Glass containers are the easiest food storage containers to keep clean. Regular washing with dish soap, a vinegar soak for mineral deposits, and thorough cleaning of the lid seal with a gap brush are all you need. Store with the lid off when empty to allow airflow.
