How to Clean Front Load Washing Machine

Why Front Load Washers Need More Attention

Front load washing machines are more water and energy efficient than top loaders — but they're also more prone to mold, mildew, and odor. The horizontal drum retains more moisture, the rubber door gasket traps water and debris in its folds, and the sealed door design limits airflow. Without regular cleaning, front loaders develop a persistent musty smell that transfers to laundry. A complete monthly cleaning routine addresses all the problem areas at once.

The Complete Front Load Washer Cleaning Checklist

For a thorough clean, tackle all four areas in one session:

  1. Drum (cleaning cycle)
  2. Rubber door gasket/seal
  3. Detergent drawer
  4. Filter

Step 1: Run a Drum Cleaning Cycle

  1. Drop one Affresh Washing Machine Cleaner tablet directly into the empty drum
  2. Select the "Drum Clean," "Clean Washer," or hottest/longest cycle available
  3. Run the full cycle — do not add detergent or laundry

Step 2: Clean the Rubber Door Gasket

  1. Pull back the rubber seal folds to expose the hidden interior
  2. Remove any debris — lint, hair, and small items collect here
  3. Apply OLELON Mold Stain Remover Gel to any moldy or discolored areas
  4. Let sit 10 minutes, then scrub with an old toothbrush
  5. Wipe clean with a damp microfiber cloth
  6. Dry thoroughly with a clean dry cloth

Step 3: Clean the Detergent Drawer

  1. Remove the drawer completely (press the release tab)
  2. Soak in hot soapy water for 10 minutes
  3. Scrub all compartments with an old toothbrush
  4. Clean the drawer housing with a cloth dampened with white vinegar
  5. Rinse, dry, and reinsert

Step 4: Clean the Filter

  1. Locate the filter access panel at the bottom front of the machine
  2. Place a shallow tray and towels to catch water
  3. Slowly unscrew the filter cap and let water drain
  4. Remove the filter, rinse under warm water, and scrub with a brush
  5. Wipe the filter housing with a microfiber cloth
  6. Reinsert and tighten firmly

Step 5: Wipe the Exterior

  • Wipe the door glass inside and out with a microfiber cloth
  • Clean the control panel with a barely damp cloth
  • Wipe down the sides and top of the machine

Daily Habits to Prevent Buildup

  • Always leave the door open after every cycle — this is the single most effective prevention habit
  • Wipe the rubber seal dry after every wash (30 seconds)
  • Leave the detergent drawer slightly open to allow drying
  • Remove laundry promptly — never leave wet clothes sitting in the drum
  • Use HE detergent in the correct amount — excess suds are the primary cause of buildup
