Why Do Glasses Turn Cloudy?
Cloudy glasses are caused by one of two things: hard water mineral deposits (calcium and magnesium) or etching — microscopic surface damage from harsh detergents or high dishwasher heat. Mineral cloudiness can be removed; etching is permanent. Knowing which you're dealing with determines the fix.
How to Tell the Difference
Dip a finger in white vinegar and rub it on the cloudy area. If the cloudiness clears up temporarily, it's mineral deposits — treatable. If it stays cloudy, it's etching — permanent surface damage.

Method 1: White Vinegar Soak (For Mineral Deposits)
- Fill a basin with equal parts white vinegar and warm water
- Submerge the cloudy glasses and soak for 15–30 minutes
- Scrub gently with a soft cloth or brush
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water
- Dry immediately with a microfiber cloth to prevent new spots
Method 2: Baking Soda Paste (For Stubborn Mineral Film)
- Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to form a paste
- Apply to the cloudy areas with a soft cloth
- Rub gently in circular motions
- Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately
Method 3: Vinegar and Dish Soap Combo
For glasses with both mineral deposits and grease film, wash first with dish soap and hot water to remove oils, then follow with a vinegar soak to dissolve mineral deposits. Dry immediately with a microfiber cloth.
Preventing Cloudy Glasses
- Hand wash delicate glasses rather than using the dishwasher
- Use a vinegar rinse — add ½ cup of white vinegar to your rinse water
- Dry glasses immediately after washing — never air dry in hard water areas
- Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners that can etch glass surfaces
