How to Clean Bathroom with Vinegar and Baking Soda
Share
Why Vinegar and Baking Soda Are the Ultimate Bathroom Cleaning Duo
White vinegar and baking soda are two of the most effective and versatile natural cleaners available — and together, they tackle almost every bathroom cleaning challenge. Vinegar's acidity dissolves mineral deposits, soap scum, and bacteria. Baking soda's mild abrasiveness scrubs away grime without scratching surfaces. When combined, they create a fizzing reaction that helps lift stubborn stains from grout and porous surfaces.
What You'll Need
- White vinegar (undiluted and diluted)
- Baking soda
- Spray bottle
- Microfiber cloths
- Grout brush
- Rubber gloves
Surface-by-Surface Guide
Toilet
Pour 1 cup of white vinegar into the toilet bowl and let sit for 30 minutes. Sprinkle baking soda around the bowl, scrub with a toilet brush, and flush. For the exterior, spray vinegar on a microfiber cloth and wipe all surfaces.
Shower and Tub
Spray undiluted white vinegar on shower walls and tub surfaces. Let sit for 15–20 minutes. Sprinkle baking soda on a damp cloth and scrub. Rinse thoroughly.
Grout Lines
Sprinkle baking soda along grout lines. Spray white vinegar over the baking soda using a spray bottle. Let the fizzing reaction work for 5–10 minutes. Scrub with a grout brush and rinse.
Sink and Faucet
Sprinkle baking soda in the sink basin and scrub with a damp cloth. For the faucet and handles, spray white vinegar and let sit 5 minutes to dissolve mineral deposits, then wipe and buff dry.
Mirror
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray lightly on the mirror and wipe with a clean microfiber cloth in a Z-pattern for a streak-free finish.
Tiles and Walls
Spray a 1:1 vinegar and water solution on tiles. Let sit 5 minutes, then wipe with a microfiber cloth. For stubborn soap scum, apply undiluted vinegar and let sit 20–30 minutes.
Floor
Mix 1 cup of white vinegar with 1 gallon of warm water. Mop or wipe the floor with this solution. For grout lines, use the baking soda + vinegar fizzing method.
Important Limitations
- Do NOT use vinegar on natural stone (marble, travertine, granite) — the acid etches the surface.
- Do NOT use vinegar on waxed surfaces.
- Baking soda and vinegar neutralize each other when mixed directly — for maximum effectiveness, apply separately or use the fizzing reaction intentionally on grout.
