How to Clean Bathroom Towels

Why Bathroom Towels Get Dirty Faster Than You Think

Bathroom towels seem clean because they're used after bathing — but they're actually one of the most bacteria-laden items in the home. Every use transfers dead skin cells, body oils, and moisture to the towel. In the warm, humid bathroom environment, bacteria multiply rapidly. Studies have found that towels used just twice can harbor millions of bacteria. Regular washing and proper drying are essential.

How Often Should You Wash Bathroom Towels?

Wash bath towels every 3–4 uses, or at least once a week. Hand towels should be washed every 2–3 days — they're used more frequently and by multiple people. Washcloths should be washed after every single use.

How to Wash Bathroom Towels Properly

Step 1: Don't Overload the Washer

Towels need room to agitate and rinse properly. Wash towels in small loads — no more than 3–4 large bath towels per load. Overloading prevents proper cleaning and rinsing.

Step 2: Use the Right Water Temperature

Wash towels in warm or hot water (60°C/140°F) to kill bacteria effectively. Hot water is especially important for towels used by someone who has been ill.

Step 3: Use the Right Amount of Detergent

Use the recommended amount of detergent — not more. Too much detergent leaves residue in the fibers that reduces absorbency and causes a musty smell over time.

Step 4: Add Vinegar to Restore Freshness

Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle instead of fabric softener. Vinegar removes detergent buildup, kills bacteria, eliminates musty odors, and restores towel absorbency. Never use fabric softener on towels — it coats the fibers and reduces absorbency over time.

Step 5: Dry Thoroughly

Tumble dry on medium-high heat until completely dry. Damp towels left in the dryer or folded while still slightly damp develop musty odors quickly. Shake towels out before drying to restore fluffiness.

How to Remove Musty Smell from Towels

If towels have developed a persistent musty smell (common when they're not drying properly between uses), wash them with 1 cup of white vinegar and no detergent on a hot cycle. Then wash again with detergent only. This strips the detergent and bacteria buildup causing the smell.

How to Keep Towels Fresh Between Washes

  • Hang towels fully spread out after each use — never leave them bunched up or on the floor.
  • Use a towel bar rather than a hook — hooks bunch the towel and prevent drying.
  • Run the exhaust fan after showering to reduce bathroom humidity.
  • Don't share towels — each person should have their own.

When to Replace Bathroom Towels

Replace towels when they: no longer absorb water well, have a persistent musty smell that washing doesn't remove, are fraying or thinning, or are more than 2 years old with daily use.
