Why Bathroom Drains Need Regular Cleaning

Bathroom drains collect hair, soap scum, toothpaste, shampoo residue, and skin cells with every use. What You'll Need

Step 1: Remove the Drain Cover and Clear Hair

Put on rubber gloves. Remove the drain cover (most unscrew or lift out). Use a drain snake or hair removal tool to pull out accumulated hair and debris from just inside the drain opening. This is often the primary cause of slow drains and is the most impactful step.

Step 2: Clean the Drain Cover

Scrub the drain cover with an old toothbrush and all-purpose cleaner to remove soap scum and buildup. Rinse thoroughly before replacing.

Step 3: Baking Soda + Vinegar Treatment

1. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda directly down the drain.
2. Follow immediately with 1/2 cup of white vinegar.
3. The fizzing reaction breaks down soap scum and organic buildup inside the drain pipe.
4. Let sit for 15–20 minutes.
5. Flush with a full kettle of boiling water (or the hottest tap water available).

Step 4: Enzyme Drain Cleaner (Monthly Maintenance)

For ongoing maintenance, use an enzyme-based drain cleaner monthly. Unlike chemical drain cleaners, enzyme cleaners use natural bacteria to digest organic buildup without damaging pipes. Pour down the drain before bed and let work overnight.

Step 5: Use a Drain Snake for Stubborn Clogs

If the drain is still slow after the baking soda treatment, use a drain snake to physically break up and remove the clog. Insert the snake into the drain, rotate to catch the clog, and pull out.

Preventing Drain Buildup
