Why Post-Illness Bathroom Cleaning Is Critical

When someone in your household has been ill — with flu, a stomach bug, COVID-19, or any contagious illness — the bathroom becomes a high-risk zone for spreading pathogens to other family members. Standard cleaning isn't enough. You need a systematic disinfection protocol that targets every surface a sick person may have touched or contaminated.

Safety First

Wear rubber gloves throughout the entire cleaning process. Open windows and run the exhaust fan for ventilation. Wash your hands thoroughly after removing gloves. If the illness was severe, consider wearing a mask during cleaning.

Step-by-Step: Post-Illness Bathroom Disinfection

Step 1: Remove and Bag Contaminated Items

Remove and bag any used tissues, towels, washcloths, or other items the sick person used. Wash towels and washcloths in hot water (60°C/140°F or higher) separately from other laundry.

Step 2: Toilet — Full Disinfection

This is the highest priority surface after illness involving vomiting or diarrhea.

• Apply toilet bowl cleaner inside the bowl and let sit 10 minutes.

Step 3: All High-Touch Surfaces

Use disinfecting wipes on every surface that was touched: door handle (both sides), light switch, faucet handles, soap dispenser pump, toilet paper holder, towel bar, cabinet handles, and the sink basin. Allow each surface to remain wet for the full contact time before wiping dry.

Step 4: Sink and Counter

Spray Clorox Disinfecting Mist on the entire sink, faucet, and counter. Let sit for contact time, then wipe clean with a fresh microfiber cloth.

Step 5: Shower and Tub

Spray Lysol Disinfectant Spray on shower walls, tub, and all fixtures. Let sit for contact time, then rinse thoroughly.

Step 6: Floor

Mop the entire floor with a disinfecting solution. Pay special attention to the area around the toilet. Discard the mop head or wash thoroughly in hot water after use.

Step 7: Ventilate

Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after cleaning. If possible, open a window to allow fresh air circulation.

After Cleaning: Prevent Spread

• Replace the sick person's toothbrush after illness.
• Wash all bathroom towels in hot water.
• Disinfect the bathroom daily while the person is still ill.
• Healthy family members should use a different bathroom if possible during illness.
