How to Clean an Espresso Machine: Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Maintenance Guide
Share
Espresso machines are precision instruments — and they reward regular cleaning with consistently excellent coffee. Coffee oils go rancid quickly and leave bitter residue; mineral scale reduces pressure and temperature accuracy. A proper cleaning routine takes just minutes a day and keeps your machine performing like new.
Daily Cleaning (After Every Use)
Portafilter and Basket
- Remove the portafilter immediately after pulling a shot.
- Knock out the used puck into a knock box or trash.
- Rinse the portafilter and basket under hot running water. Use a small brush to scrub the basket holes.
- Wipe dry with a microfiber cloth.
Group Head
- Run a blank shot (no portafilter) for 3-5 seconds to flush hot water through the group head and clear coffee residue.
- Wipe the group head gasket and shower screen with a damp cloth or group head brush.
Steam Wand
- Immediately after steaming milk, purge the wand by opening the steam valve for 1-2 seconds to clear milk from inside.
- Wipe the outside of the wand with a damp microfiber cloth while still warm — dried milk is much harder to remove.
- If milk has dried on the wand, soak a cloth in hot water and wrap around the wand for 1-2 minutes to soften, then wipe clean.
Drip Tray
Empty and rinse the drip tray daily. Wash with dish soap and warm water weekly.
Weekly Cleaning
Backflushing (For Machines with 3-Way Solenoid Valve)
Backflushing cleans the group head and internal brew path. Most prosumer machines support this.
- Insert a blind basket (solid, no holes) into the portafilter.
- Lock the portafilter into the group head.
- Run the pump for 10 seconds, then stop for 5 seconds. Repeat 5 times.
- This forces water back through the group head, flushing out coffee oils.
- For a deeper clean, add a small amount of espresso machine cleaner to the blind basket and repeat the process, then follow with several plain water backflushes.
Shower Screen
- Remove the shower screen (usually held by a single screw).
- Soak in hot water with a little dish soap for 10 minutes.
- Scrub with a brush and rinse. Reinstall.
Monthly Cleaning: Descaling
Mineral scale builds up in the boiler and water lines, reducing pressure and temperature accuracy. Descale monthly if you have hard water, every 2-3 months with soft or filtered water.
- Use a Universal Descaling Solution compatible with your machine brand.
- Follow your machine's descale mode instructions (consult the manual).
- Run multiple rinse cycles with fresh water after descaling.
Cleaning the Water Reservoir
- Remove the reservoir and empty completely.
- Wash with warm soapy water and a bottle brush.
- Rinse thoroughly and refill with fresh filtered water.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I clean my espresso machine?
Daily: portafilter, steam wand, group head flush. Weekly: backflush, shower screen. Monthly: descale. This routine keeps the machine in peak condition.
Why does my espresso taste bitter?
Bitter espresso is often caused by rancid coffee oil buildup in the portafilter, basket, or group head. Clean these parts thoroughly and run a backflush cycle.
Can I use vinegar to descale my espresso machine?
Some manufacturers advise against vinegar as it can damage rubber seals and gaskets over time. A dedicated descaling solution is safer and more effective for espresso machines.
How do I clean a steam wand with dried milk?
Soak a cloth in hot water and wrap it around the wand for 2-3 minutes to soften the dried milk. Then wipe clean. For stubborn buildup, soak the tip in a small cup of hot water for 5 minutes.
