How to Clean a Glass Cutting Board

Glass Cutting Boards: Easy to Clean, Hard on Knives

Glass cutting boards are non-porous, stain-resistant, and extremely easy to clean and sanitize. They're also dishwasher safe and don't absorb odors or bacteria. The main downside: they're very hard on knife edges, dulling them quickly. But from a cleaning perspective, glass is the lowest-maintenance cutting board material available.

What You'll Need

Everyday Cleaning

Glass cutting boards are dishwasher safe — simply run through the dishwasher after every use. For hand washing, use warm soapy water and a non-scratch sponge. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a microfiber cloth to prevent water spots.

Removing Stuck-On Food

Soak in warm soapy water for 10–15 minutes to soften stuck food, then scrub with a non-scratch sponge. For dried-on residue, a plastic scraper works well on glass without scratching.

Removing Stains

Glass is naturally stain-resistant, but strongly colored foods can leave surface staining. Apply Bar Keepers Friend, scrub with a non-scratch sponge, and rinse thoroughly. For light staining, white vinegar wiped on and left for 5 minutes works well.

Removing Water Spots and Streaks

Hard water leaves white mineral deposits and streaks on glass. Wipe with undiluted white vinegar, let sit 2–3 minutes, then wipe clean with a microfiber cloth. This dissolves mineral deposits and leaves the glass streak-free.

Sanitizing

Glass is non-porous, so bacteria can't penetrate the surface. Regular dishwasher cleaning provides thorough sanitization. For hand washing, wipe with white vinegar after washing for additional sanitizing.

What to Avoid

  • Dropping — glass shatters and chips
  • Sudden temperature changes — thermal shock can crack glass boards
  • Abrasive steel wool — scratches the surface
  • Storing where it can fall — always store flat or in a secure rack

Final Thoughts

Glass cutting boards are the easiest to clean and sanitize of all cutting board materials. Dishwasher safe, stain-resistant, and non-porous — maintenance is minimal. The only real care consideration is handling carefully to prevent chipping and cracking.
